Exercise on a Budget

5 Ways to Lose Weight, Not Money

J
The recent economic downturn provides one more excuse to not exercise; I can't afford it! But if you're serious about your health, you can get in shape without an expensive health club membership you can't afford. Here are five ideas that are free or low cost to get you started.

Public Library. Joining is free, and along with exercise books, most have video libraries with tapes and DVDs on everything from yoga to kickboxing.

Volunteer. Opportunities abound, and volunteering may give you a welcome spiritual boost as well. Hospitals generally need volunteers, and you can log a lot of miles, especially if transporting patients. During the summer, many schools and community centers run programs for youth; an hour of kickball or supervising kids on the playground can burn quite a few calories! Or, check with a local retirement home or assisted living facility; most have an assortment of exercise and physical therapy programs. As a bonus, you may be able to use their pool or exercise equipment for free, or at a reduced rate.

Walk. Walking is still one of the best, and cheapest, ways of staying in shape. All you really need is a good, supportive pair of walking shoes. You'll be more motivated if you have a companion; invite a friend or neighbor along. If possible, set a regular day and time, and treat it like an appointment. Prefer a canine companion? You might want to offer to walk a friend or neighbor's pooch. Our local shelter is always grateful for volunteers to walk, play with, and socialize their dogs; give them a call!

Exercise Ball. These can be purchased at most sporting good and general retail stores. Most cost anywhere from $10.00 to $15.00. Intimidated by the book or video that comes with it? Start with the following two exercises, which can even be done in front of the television. First, sit on the edge of the couch or chair. Grip the ball tightly between your knees, and squeeze as hard as you possibly can. Hold for five seconds. Release. Start out doing this ten times, then increase both the length of time you squeeze and the number of times you do it. Then add the second exercise; grip the ball between you ankles and lift the ball off the floor, hold it, and lower it. Try for ten lifts, then increase the amount of time you hold the ball, and the number of lifts.

Jump Rope. These are relatively inexpensive, and give a wonderful aerobic and upper body workout. Because this is a more intense type of exercise, be sure and take into consideration any medical problems you might have. It's always a good bet to check with your doctor before beginning any form of exercise program, especially if you haven't tried it before.

Of course, keeping in shape can pay off in other ways as well. It may motivate you to take a good look at your diet, cutting out fast food and snacks, and saving you a few dollars. Once you're in better shape, you may be able to tackle some of those jobs you've been paying other people to do; washing your car, mowing your lawn, cleaning siding and gutters. Good health can pay off in so many ways, it's a shame not to start today!
