Exercise for Fibromyalgia

Jim Posey
People suffering from fibromyalgia have tried it all to ease the pain of their disease. Exercise is often bro34ught up as a way for people with fibromyalgia to cope with the chronic pain. Many healthy individuals have trouble sticking with an exercise program for any significant period of time, it is understandable as to why so many fibromyalgia patients are not exercising in order to relieve the pain of fibromyalgia.

Fibromyalgia patients almost always have the inkling that exercise will end up making their pain worse than it already is. Dozens of different studies have shown this to not be the case, in the slightest. It is understandable when you consider that people suffering from fibromyalgia have sleep disturbances as well as increased stress levels and the feeling of being completely drained of energy. Gradually increasing exercising will treat all three of these symptoms of fibromyalgia. You have to make sure that the exercise that you choose has the right level of intensity; otherwise it could do more harm than good.

There are two types of exercise for fibromyalgia. The first kind of exercise that any fibromyalgia patient should be involved in is aerobic. Aerobic exercises include walking, swimming, jogging, and riding a bike. Aerobic exercise has been known to help all people with insomnia and will cause your sleep disturbances to diminish. Any exercise that you start should be with the support of your doctor, however almost anyone with fibromyalgia can go walking around in a pool. Add just a little bit more time every day, because progression is important.

The other type of exercise that has proven to be beneficial to fibromyalgia is stretching. Getting into yoga or a tai chi class will be best because they include relaxation and meditation into the class period. Stretching will increase your range of motion and have a real impact on the level of pain that you feel on a day to day basis. You also need to talk to your doctor just in case stretching would be detrimental for you. Stress has also been known to melt away during long held stretches.

Gradually getting in the groove of doing exercise for fibromyalgia can seriously reduce some of the nastier symptoms of the condition. Many patients find that they get best results from mixing both aerobic and stretching into their day. Having a stretching routine in the morning can make a huge difference in how much stress you feel during the day.
