Exercise Has Positive Effect on Knees

The Ongoing Debate of Exercise for the Knees Now Has Sound Evidence in Its Favor

Just today a report has been released by the American College of Sports Medicine giving powerful proof that exercise is good for the knees.

This new report has been published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Medicine® an official science journal of the ACSM.

This research study was headed by Dr. Donna Urquhart, Ph.D., and Dr. Flavia Cicuttini, Ph.D., who had observed the outcomes of physical activity on certain areas of the knee.

Dr. Cicuttini, head of the musculoskeletal unit in the School of Public Health and Prevention Medicine at Monash University in Australia, stated there has been studies in which observed the outcome of physical activity on the knee as a whole, but no study has observed the outcomes of physical activity on individual parts of the knee. The study had revealed that exercise affects each area of the knee differently.

According to the findings, even though exercise is associated to osteophytes or bony spurs, there was no damaging changes to joint space(place where cartilage is stored). There were beneficial outcomes on cartilage stability with proof of more volumes less deficiency.

Dr. Urquhart states the findings are important for they do suggest that osteophytes, without cartilage damage, possible are a functional adjustment to mechanical stimulation.

The report contained information from 28 studies consisting of 9,737 participants throughout the world.

All of the studies in the report had included the observation of the association between physical activity and knee osteoarthritis also they had included MRI evidence of osteoarthritic knees when examining disease progression or healthy knees when examining disease incidence.

Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease which attacks the cartilage and underlying bone and most of the time affects knees, hips and hands. Almost 27 million Americans have osteoarthritis which is the leading cause of disability.

A recent study last year from the University of California San Francisco, had demonstrated that people who are at risk for osteoarthritis can delay or even halt the disease with a few minor changes in physical activity.

Activities such as walking, running and strength training have been recommended. Yoga has also been used frequently for osteoarthritis for it aides in numerous benefits among them is improving range of motion and decrease of pain.

Other treatments for osteoarthritis have included:

Chiropractic

Chiropractors and their treatments are well noted for arthritis. Chiropractors can notice even the smallest earliest changes in the joints. They can observe the affect of degenerative changes within the spine, hip, knees among other weight bearing joints.

Chiropractic treatments have the ability to remove and or decrease pain along with improvement of joint functioning using numerous therapies. Among those therapies is trigger point therapy. This is not limited to other therapies in which also are provided such as nutritional, therapeutic exercise, herbs and others. Treatment is based on the individual which will suit their needs.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture treatments can provide pain relief for osteoarthritis. Treatment schedule is designed by the acupuncturists. Normally treatments are twice a week for eight weeks, then a regular schedule will be based upon the individuals needs. Sources:
