Generally, every Martial Arts class begins with stretching, then pushups, crunches or both. After that, the warm-up often continues with jogging around the classroom and a few sets of jumping jacks. Then once that is all over, the class actually begins. You will be taught to kick and strike a punching bag in certain ways, and you will learn how to block when others attack you. These kicks, strikes, and also blocks are all essential parts of a cardio workout, because they are constant movements of your body that keeps your heart rate up and burn fat. On an average of three days a week, most people can get into shape with their choice of Martial Art style within the first three to four months.
In fact, considering how Martial Arts popularity is growing each year, more and more corporate gyms are offering classes in different types of styles. Classes run from the most standard, including Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and Kickboxing, to the more focused and cutting-edge such as, Judo, Capoeira, and Mixed Martial Arts. Then there are those classes where some facilities offer Martial Arts movements or style, but this does not help you in self defense situations. One example is Tai Chi Chuan, a Chinese Martial Art that uses slow movements of striking and kicking for meditation, and in ancient China for medical reasons because it will improve one's chi (internal energy).
Exercising with Martial Arts is definitely a great way to stay in shape because not only is there the school to practice in, but you may practice anywhere you see fit. If you want to practice your style while you're away on vacation or on a business trip you can do so. As long as you have a plan or a certain goal in mind, you can achieve it. There is no limit to what you can do with Martial Arts as recreation, fitness or both.
