With age, there generally comes some amount of memory loss - usually nothing too significant. However, there are a few things some medical experts say people can do to exercise their minds so that memory loss does not become a problem.

Exercise is one way of exercising your brain because it increases the oxygen flow to your brain. Some researchers say that walking even just three times each week can reduce a person's risk of getting dementia.

Normally when people are told that they need to exercise more, the first thing they do is wince at the idea of being on a regimen. However, exercise for the sake of exercising your mind, really comes down to a workout that works best for your lifestyle. You can take a walk, run, play basketball - any sort of physical activity that gets you outside and active.

Plus, you do not have to exercise for a set amount of time or certain number of days. Just do what works for you.

Another way to exercise your mind and also help retain your memory is to socialize. The word socialize means a lot of different things to different people. However, in general and in the context of this article, socializing just means retaining or making relationships with people.

Having friends and family around is one way of reducing the amount of stress in your life caused from work, traffic and the many other occurrences in our daily lives. Being able to communicate with other people is also a way to keep your mind stimulated because you are constantly encountering new people and ideas.

The reduction of stress in general is another way to help ensure that your brain and memory remain intact. Stress has a tendency to cloud our minds with the one thing that is stressing us out. As a result, someone who is stressed out tends to focus only on that one thing and cannot see past that. So whatever you need to do to curb that stress would be good for your overall health.

This is easier said than done, but if you are able to pinpoint what causes you to get stressed or anxious, then that is half the battle. Once you have identified the problem, you will learn how to distance yourself from that problem so that it does not consume your life.

You should also make sure that you are eating the right foods which help in maintaining your health and exercising your brain. Eating fruits, vegetables and fish are all things that are good for your mind. In addition, you should stay away from excessive alcohol consumption and avoid trans and saturated fats.
