Exercise Tips for the Fall

Kurt Simonsen
As summer begins to fade away, with the long, hot days dwindling, where exercise was often replaced by the beach and hard workouts exchanged for vacations and barbeques, people and their attitudes toward fitness begin to change. Summer, as a season, brings with it a relaxed approach, one that encourages a person to sit back a touch more than usual and recharge the rundown batteries from a tough winter and spring. So, as summer alters itself with lessening temperatures, shorter days, and far fewer bikinis, most people begin anew, with outlooks that morph from fruity drinks with umbrellas to something more focused, more individual.

Thus, with fall creeping in, it brings with it a more serious tone. Rather than steel drums playing on a sun-drenched deck, fall offers crisp foliage and invigorating temperatures, and it provides the perfect backdrop to transition to a real fitness plan that combines personal goals with the beauty of the outdoors. No other season can do what fall does, as it has a way of inspiring and motivating, breathing life into virtually anyone. So, check the tips for fall fitness that follow as a way to consider how you can use this new season as a springboard for making your life more rewarding and healthy. Remember that being truly fit is not just about how large you can grow your muscles,

Generate new goals: Set a new group of goals for yourself. Do something brand new that you have never tried before. Start a new type of workout plan that challenges you, that is not just a circuit at a gym or a set of dumbbells in your garage. Give yourself a new perspective for which to strive-it will rejuvenate your spirit and add considerable pep to your workouts.

Blend exercise with life: Make your fitness plan part of what you do during the day. Family bike rides, friends playing Frisbee, pick up basketball games...whatever you choose, make life about community activity. Remember that exercise is about improving the entire being, not just building a great set of arms. If you are happy physically and spiritually, your life is a far better place to be. There is a deep and strong connection between the mind and body, so being emotionally fit, working out those critical relationships in life-with your children, your spouse, your friends-will give you the balance you need.

Use the outdoors before you can't: When poor weather arrives and fall changes from fresh and exciting to winter's miserable grasp, the ability to get outside and use nature as your gym seriously declines. Use the early fall mornings, where temperatures are just cool enough to wake you up a bit, for long runs or walks with your partner. Jog on the beach in the late afternoon with your dog, or climb on your bike for a foliage ride on a Saturday afternoon.

Join something: Get involved in a group of some sort. Local running or cycling groups, adult soccer or tennis leagues, swim or basketball teams are all good chances to get fit while forming new relationships. Also, obligating yourself to a group solidifies commitment, which makes you far more likely to stick with it.

Use the time in the day well: With fall days being considerably shorter than the summer's, utilizing those little unused spaces during your day becomes more important. Going for a walk or run on your lunch hour, rising a bit earlier to do twenty minutes of yoga, or doing sit-ups while watching television will help you stay fit and happy. Basically, as the fall sets in, you need to become a better multi-tasker to make exercise an important part of your life.

Have a focus: Knowing what is coming, the heavy eating seasons of Thanksgiving and Christmas, begin to build the healthy lifestyle you need in order to combat those holidays that pummel you with food. If you stay focused on cardio work and healthy eating, then splurging during those holidays won't matter. However, if you allow the fall to slow you down, shedding those pounds and feeling better about yourself will be near impossible come spring time.

In the end, make your lifestyle one that is active and lively, allowing your body to be fit and your mind to be happy.
