Exercises to Do as a Family Together with Kids

Laurie Tam
Once in a great while, I would see some very overweight kid and I would be wondering what the heck did the parents feed for food? For example, I was there in person trying to book an appointment so I can get back into it and then I saw some very overweight girl that seem to be between 3-5 years old. I couldn't believe my eyes but the size and shape she was in show proof that either she didn't eat right due to her parents and maybe lack of exercise for her. I am a mom of three girls expecting a fourth child in January 2010 and I encourage my kids to be physically active outside of the house. Here are my ideas on what you can do as a family to stay and be fit together.

1. Kids like to play hide and go seek. This can be played inside the house but sometimes they run. Since there are lots of rooms in the house, make sure they don't pound so hard on the floor. Over time with too much pounding means that the floor will need replacement sooner rather than later.

2. Have them help you clean up the rooms and it teaches them to be better organizers later on in life. You don't want to be stuck cleaning and organizing for them for the rest of your life. This is a great time to organize together where they work in their room while you work with yours. If they needed help, help them when you can.

3. I have seen some families that ride bikes or even walk together. Biking seem to be popular among families on the trail of where I am. You might even get a friend along the way at the trail. Bike trails are great if all of you are biking together.

4. Hiking helps the leg muscles to become stronger since you are walking uphill and your body will work better if you stick in some running too. Running helps keep your heart pumping even harder which means more oxygen comes your way. Just make sure you have a bottle or two to have with you especially for very hot days.

5. If you have a big front and/or backyard, during the very hot and sunny days can have a slip and slide where everyone is in their bathing suit and slide on those things. The kids have fun along the way while getting wet at the same time.

6. Swimming pools are great for families as well. Whether it is done in your own resident with a pool or at some other places that have one, have everything ready such as bathing suit, towels and some money if you have to pay to get in. If you have a baby or toddler, keep a close eye on them and never leave them alone. Kids can drown in those things. Having a lifeguard around will be another plus.

7. Mountain Climbing- There are indoor versions where you are located at if in a big city such as Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Chicago, Portland. Your local library should have local publications for you to take for free where they list activities and places to check out. Sometimes they even have neat articles pertaining to what you can do as a family in your area or around.

8. Bowling- One of my favorite sports to do and an uncle of mine love this. I believe this sport teaches you about balance just as much as gymnastics and biking but in this case try to get a strike with the bowling ball. It does costs some money but pretty cheap to pay for each person.

9. Ice skaing, baseball, basketball, hockey and other sports to do. Great cardio workout and teaches everyone about teamwork.

Whatever your family chooses to do together, make it a point to have fun. Kids need fun and coming from a parent point of view, anyone can find the time to spend with their family and kids need this time. If a family works together, the family will stay strong and the kids will be wiser. Enjoy the moments with your kids.
