Exercising After Pregnancy

Heather Wood
There is no doubt that most women tend to gain at least a bit of extra weight after they have had a baby. Of course, when you are eating for two, it seems as though it would be pretty hard not to gain at least a little weight. However, there is one factor that tends to make matters worse. A lot of the weight that women gain is due to the fact that many women immediately cease to exercise as soon as they find out that they are pregnant, even if it is within the first month. There is no need to stop exercising when you find out that you are pregnant. In fact, it is highly recommended for you to exercise during pregnancy in order to make sure that your labor goes safer and to help prepare your body for carrying the baby. If you have just found out that you are pregnant, your best option is to continue to exercise for most of the duration of your pregnancy to prevent gaining unwanted pounds.

How Long After Labor Can You Exercise?
The amount of time after you deliver your baby before you can begin exercising again all depends on the person and the recommendation from their physician. Generally, the amount of time that it will take is six weeks after you have given birth. Of course, this can depend on a number of factors, such as whether or not you had to have a C-section. Everybody's bodies are different, so while it may have only took your sister three weeks after giving birth to begin exercising again; it could end up taking you eight weeks or more. The main thing that you should keep in mind is that you should not exercise at all until you feel as though you are completely ready to. Before you even consider making a decision about whether or not you should begin to exercise, you should first consult your doctor and get his or her opinion.

What Type of Exercise is the Best?
If you decide that you want to exercise soon after pregnancy than you need to make sure that you will not be overexerting yourself. There are many different types of exercises which are not too strenuous that will help you lose the pounds, or just become healthier all together. You should plan your schedule so that you will exercise during a particular time during the day for three days a week for at least twenty to forty minutes. Some of the most common types of exercise that is used in order to lose weight after giving birth include light to brisk walking, light jogging, light swimming, yoga, and other forms of moderate exercise.

What Exercise Should You Avoid?
Although you have heard time and time again throughout your lifetime that one of the main keys to losing weight is doing aerobic exercise, but it may not be wise to begin aerobics quickly following pregnancy. Aerobics is a way of exercise which can include activities such as dancing, bicycling, swimming laps, running and other types of "heavier" forms of exercise. Unfortunately, it is usually not recommended for women immediately after giving birth, especially if they are breast feeding. It tends to make you become dehydrated faster than other types of exercises generally do, and women are more prone to overexerting themselves through aerobic exercises. It is not to say that you can not pick up an aerobics routine eventually, but it is something that should be eased into gently.

So What Type of Plan is Best For You?
Many factors will determine what type of plan will be the best and most effective for you and your body. You need to find a plan that you will stick with, even during your limited amount of weekly time. Keep in mind that you do have a baby now, so it may be a good idea to incorporate an exercise that you can perform with the baby. You will need to find a form of exercise that you really do enjoy. One of the ways to finding the best types of exercise for you is to ask your doctor. They can give you exercise suggestions and they may also have recommendations for postpartum exercise classes.
