When you exercise you increase your heart rate not just during the time of increased physical activity but even after you're done exercising as well.
Exercising works your muscles harder and to support this the heart needs to pump more to get blood to those muscles. Blood is nourishing them as well as everything else in the body, and they need that added support to do what's demanded of them during exercise. So the heart pumps faster to increase the blood circulation.
Even after exercise is over the blood is still pumping harder than normal as it needs to provide the healing elements needed to nourish those muscles; they've just had a lot of necessary nutrients taken out of them in order to meet the demands of exercise and so they need to continue to be repaired and nourished so they can renew themselves. So when you exercise on a regular basis you're increasing your blood circulation during exercise and even when at rest.
Benefit to the skin.
So of what benefit is this increased circulation to the skin? Just as the muscles are getting more nourishment when blood circulation is increased, so is the skin. It is getting more nourishment as the blood circulates more often and is also getting dead cells and other impurities taken away more often. This means that it's getting more of the good stuff and is having more of the bad stuff removed.
Important: An added benefit to the skin when you exercise is that the blood is being pushed harder by the heart. This added pressure means that blood is then able to reach as far up into the skin's small capillaries as possible. Poor circulation means that the blood may not be reaching into the uppermost layers of the skin, but when it does reach these layers the skin is nourished in every part and impurities are also taken away from these layers.
You may notice that your face and skin on other parts of your body become red when you exercise; this is the blood reaching those top layers. All that nourishment does nothing but good things for the skin at that point!
Skin and exercize.
Maybe by now you've put all this together and realize how important exercise is to healthy, glowing, radiant skin. Not exercising doesn't help your skin to be nourished and to heal itself, whereas regular exercise is nothing but beneficial for your skin overall.
The skin is not like the rest of your body where overfeeding it is a bad thing. The more often the blood circulates to bring those vital elements to your skin, the better it is. Increasing your regular physical activity and especially adding some vigorous exercise to your routine may be one of the best things you do for your skin.
Tips on exercising.
If you're not very active right now and dread the thought of becoming active, what to do? How can you get active and help to improve your skin's appearance if you just can't make any major lifestyle changes or are so out of shape that you get out of breath just by peeling an orange?
Here are some tips to consider:
Take it slow. You can't go from being completely sedentary to being ready to run a marathon in a matter of days. Try just walking around the block a few times after dinner - you can do that, can't you?
Make gradual increases in your routine. Walk around the block a few times, 3 nights this week. Next week try it for four nights. The week after, five nights. The week after that, increase how many times you walk around the block by just once each time you're out. Do that for two weeks, then work on increasing your pace, and so on. If you ease yourself into changes they'll be safer and easier to stick with.
Make an appointment to exercise just like everything else and don't give yourself a choice about it. You probably hate going to work every morning but when the alarm clock goes off, you don't give yourself a choice about getting out of bed. Think of exercise as the same - you don't have a choice; just do it.
Take time to appreciate changes in your body and your skin with your exercising. Feel more energy? Stop for a moment and take a deep breath, enjoying that feeling. Feeling more limber and flexible? Take a moment to stretch and see how good that feels. You'll also notice you have more color in your skin and that you just look more radiant overall. Don't hesitate to give yourself a moment to appreciate that.
Get the kids involved. Go to the mall with them just so you have an excuse to walk around. Have them pick out a place they want to visit that involves walking - the zoo, an aquarium, or a nearby museum. If the kids are involved and are looking forward to going someplace you'll be less likely to allow yourself to cancel your plans. Get a badminton set and put it up in the yard. Play catch or toss a Frisbee with them.
Get a dog. If you have a dog, you're more likely to walk it or play in the yard with it.
Take a class that you'll enjoy that's also active. This might mean dancing of any variety (ballroom, square dancing, country line dancing, jazzercise), swimming, tennis, or even golf. Many people don't participate in these things because they don't know how but if you take a class that's meant for beginners you're more likely to participate.
Remember too that exercise doesn't just mean in a gym or on a certain piece of equipment. Cleaning out the basement is exercise as is all other forms of housework. Volunteer someplace such as a soup kitchen; this will get you off your feet and keep you busy and active, which means exercising.
Go dancing with your spouse, join a bowling league, or take up karate. Whatever you need to do in order to get and stay active, do it! Your skin will thank you for it in terms of being glowing and radiant.
