The first step to getting rid of the pesky bright red bumps is to search the facial cleansing aisle at a local drug store. There are dozens of over-the-counter cleansers, creams, and masks that promise to give you a clear complexion within a matter of weeks. Brands such as Clearasil, Neutrogena, Biore, Oxy, and many more are branded with "Dermatologist Recommended" and "Guaranteed to Work" which give even higher hopes of fighting off acne. Usually after much deliberation you finally decide to purchase the most recent product you have seen advertised on television that is endorsed by a well known celebrity. Sometimes a person is lucky enough to have minor acne that is successfully treated with an over-the-counter product and don't have to continue searching for their miracle treatment.
But what if you aren't that lucky and have purchased every brand possible with no luck? The next step is to make an appointment with a certified Dermatologist. The doctor will most likely prescribe a prescription antibiotic, topical cream, or facial cleanser to battle the bacteria that causes acne. So you leave the office with high hopes that the new medication will work and soon you will have a clear complexion. Sometimes you may have been unlucky with the OTC medications but the prescription ones work wonders. You stick with that regime and everything is dandy. If you aren't so lucky you go back for several more appointments to try something new.
What if none of the prescription medications work either? Now what? Often Dermatologists offer alternative methods to treating acne but they are expensive. After you are finally sick of all the acne and blackheads running your life you probably give-in to the expensive treatments. Omnilux Light Therapy might be offered and you sit under a blue or red light for 20 minutes twice a week. I paid $750 for 6 rounds which totaled $4,500. Cool Touch laser also might be offered where your face is partially numbed and the doctor lasers away. Did I mention your face is only partially numbed? The pain equivalent of this procedure feels as if you are being pierced with needles 150 times. I paid $1,200 per treatment for 4 rounds which totaled $4,800. I ended up leaving with more freckles than ever before, the same amount of acne, and a bright red face.
Most people probably would give up at this point and just deal with the fact acne will always be apart of their life. I kept trying new methods though. I ordered Murad, Nature's Cure, and ProActive from infomercials and tried each of them religiously. No luck, just more money wasted.
I gave up at that point. I decided I wouldn't keep wasting money and I just dealt with the fact I would always have acne on my face and back. I used to look in the mirror and want to peel my face off. I tried covering the acne up with makeup but that didn't work. I discontinued all use of foundation at that point.
One day my coworker approached me with a new product. I was really skeptical and expressed no interest. To me it was just another product on the market that promised great results but never delivered. He gave me the product anyway and after sitting around for a while I finally decided to try it. What is the worst that would happen?
Skin Laboratory
20% Pure Salicylic Acid Peel
Can we say absolute miracle potion? I put some on a cotton ball and swabbed it all over my face. It burned for the first few minutes but it was tolerable. I washed it off after 5 minutes and went to bed. For the first time in 6 years I woke up and didn't see a new pimple or blackhead. I used the salicylic acid peel every other day for 4 weeks and my skin significantly improved. I still don't have a great complexion but I have very few pimples and less breakouts. I swear by this method of treating acne!
