Exotic Animals and Zanesville Ohio

Julie Wimmer
Unless you live under a big rock covered with a lot of moss, you know about the wild animals that were loose in Zanesville, Ohio these past couple of days. I am sure Animal Rights Activists are up in arms over what happened, but really, no once could have expected this incident to happen or how it would be handled.

Jack Hanna, conservationist and famous zookeeper, even spoke out for the police and authorities because of the danger these wild animals posed to humans when they were loose. Even though I respected his thoughts, I know he was saddened that 49 of them were killed, as was I. But I don't blame the police. I blame their owner who set them free and then killed himself. It was his final "F - you" to the world, but he ended up murdering those animals he supposedly cared for.

Terry Thompson, however, did not care for these animals the way they should have been cared for, and in 2005 was convicted of animal cruelty charges. Last year, Thompson was imprisoned for having illegal firearms. This is not a man, who had repeated run-ins with lawmakers, most of us would befriend. Thompson killed himself after releasing cage doors and leaving fences open on the property. His last cowardly act of vengence.

During the hunt for all of these loose, exotic animals, schools were closed and residents were told to stay in cars and houses because these animals were considered very dangerous.

The zoo in Columbus, Ohio that took in the six animals that were not killed is looking for donations so they can be taken care of. If you wish to donate, contact: http://columbuszoo.org/

Nice report, Julie and it was a tragic ending for all those animals due to one person.

I too thought the owner was the biggest problem in this situation. Sad. Those animals could have gone to zoos or other responsible parties.

It's too bad when people want to own animals but don't take care of them.

Sorry to hear about that episode.

This was near my neck of the woods (not close enough for me to actually encounter the animals, but close enough to be on the local news first). If I would have had more time, I would have written about it. I think what he did was incredibly selfish. He should have called the zoo to see if they could take any of the animals instead of releasing them to their death. Who knows what he was thinking.
