Nowadays the United States is a melting pot of different cultures and traditions. An integral part of these different cultures and traditions is delicious foods. Many times when we think of foreign foods, we think that they must be very complicated to make. This is not always the case. Many of these foods taste complicated because they are using flavor combinations that are not readily recognizable to your palette. So you instantly think that it must be hard to recreate. The is not always so.
If you're having people over to dinner. It's very simple to have some unique dishes with a flair for the exotic. And it won't take much longer to create than your average pasta or chicken dish.
Russian Stewed Chicken
1 whole chicken
salt and pepper to taste
4 small whole onions
1/2 head cauliflower
1 pint mushrooms
1 cup french peas
Cut chicken into pieces at the joints and let stew in enough water to keep meat from sticking to the pan well seasoned with salt and pepper. Then after about 30 minutes add the remaining ingredients. Let all cook until tender.
East India Fish
1/2 lb cooked salmon
1oz. butter
2 small onions chopped fine
1 oz. coconut
2 hard boiled eggs chopped
1 pint of milk
1 tsp. of curry paste (curry powder and water made into a paste)
1 tsp. paprika
salt to taste
1 large tblsp. cooked rice
Slice salmon then heat butter in a stew pan. Add chopped onions, coconut and hard boiled eggs. Cook for about 7 minutes then add milk. Let boil. Add your fish, your curry paste, your paprika and your salt. Cook about 7 more minutes. Stir in the rice gently. Serve hot with toast for dipping.
Vienna Peach Torte
Pie Crust
4 Fresh Peaches
1 cup Brown Sugar
1/2 cup fruity white wine or pink zinfandel
3 egg whites
2 tblsp. sugar
Slice the peaches. Lay in pie crust. Sprinkle with brown sugar and wine to your liking. Bake in oven until done.
Mix egg whites with sugar and beat until stiff. Spread over pie. Heat in oven a few more minutes until ready.
Belgian Potato Salad
5 Thin sliced potatoes
1 cup chopped celery and onion
salt and pepper to taste
2 hard boiled egg yolks
1 tblsp. olive oil
2 tblsp. vinegar
chopped fresh parsley
Mix the potatoes, celery and onion. Season with salt and pepper. Mix the egg yolks with olive oil then mix in salad. Add vinegar. Sprinkle chopped parsley on top.
