Many Americans have concerns about eating chicken and beef for various reasons. One reason many Americans have issues with eating chicken or beef involves the way the animals are raised and cared for. Sure ultimately we are going to kill and eat the animals, but we do not like the fact that the animals are treated in an inhumane fashion.
It is a well known fact that chickens raised for meat are normally kept in a tiny, dirty cage. Personally I find it quite gross to consider that the food I am about to eat lived in a little cage and stepped in its own shit day after day, and was possibly covered in poop for most of its life. I am sorry I would not knowingly eat anything that had come in contact with crap.
Additionally many Americans have a major issue with beef and chicken because we know that these poor animals have been pumped full of chemicals and hormones. Food has changed over the years. If we have to mass produce animals for food, we need to make serious changes in the way the animals are raised, and cared for.
Also many Americans are seeking more flavorful foods. Buffalo and Elk are lean, healthy and really yummy. These types of meats are being offered by more and more restaurants and specialty stores. Venison or aka deer is also a delicious meat, if it is processed properly. Venison is a diverse meat and can be used in place of hamburger in nearly any recipe. Venison balls are fantastic in place of a traditional meatball.
Venison Chili gets rave reviews in the Hocking Hills region. Venison is somewhat harder to acquire, you can purchase venison meat at some specialty shops, but chances are you will have to either hunt it on your own, or know a hunter.
It is somewhat neat to see that Venison is becoming a popular meat, as in my area as a child, only the very poor families ate deer meat. Now young urban professionals are going crazy and paying a ridiculous price to obtain the meat of buffalo, elk, and venison. In southeastern Ohio the going rate for a six ounce patty of these meats is about seven dollars per patty. It is well worth every penny!
