Exotic Pets: Donna the Iguana

Linda Louise Johnson
I wanna pet iguana!
I'll walk it on a leash
and when people say "sheesh!
I 'll say you wanna
piece of my iguana?
You can have your flora and fauna
Just give me an iguana
and I'll name her Donna.
Donna the Iguana
won't make me cough or sneeze
no barking, no shedding, no allergies
everybody will be so pleased.
Although an iguana's
not a prima donna
she does need room to roam
and a big-enough home
or she'll get all stressed
miss the rain forest, and get depressed.
So I'll make Donna's cage spacious
and I'll even be so gracious
as to provide a tree limb, and places to hide
rocks to perch on, a swing and a slide?
One and a half iguanas high
and five iguanas long or wide
that's how big her place has to be
unless I want her mad at me.
Gotta keep my iguana
as warm as a sauna
I'm talking at least 80 degrees
with one hot spot of 95 please
I'll need a spot light, a hot light and a heater,
and lots of veggies and fruit to feed her.
To Donna my iguana it will be nirvana!
I'll never let her get sad or lonely
or make her think that to me she's only
a lizard or just another reptile--
if she knows she's special maybe she'll smile!
You know why I wanna
happy iguana?
So she'll eat and grow
as big as Tijuana!
Here's a fact I learned about iguanas
The Moms lay eggs that hatch baby Donna's!
I'll let you have one if you wanna.
And here's one more amazing iguana fact--
If her tail gets cut off, it grows right back!
There's so much to learn about iguanas!
I'll find out more about Donna manana.

  • If iguanas get too cold, they get sicky.
  • If iguanas get too lonely, they feel icky.
  • If iguanas have no place to hide, they act snide.
Wanna pet iguana? All you have to do is duplicate a rain forest in your home, and your iguana could grow to be six feet long (including tail), and live for ten or twenty years.

I'm with you Maria. They really never become "pets" and as adults are quite dangerous.

Pretty wild! If any more make their way into Florida and Texas we'll hardly be able to consider them exotic anymore! Nice job!

Holy moly, Lindy Lou, that was amazing! I can't believe you fit all that important iguana info into a cute fun poem! One little point I gotta stick in... I always heard abt the tail growing back, and I'm sure it can, but our son had an iguana (I do think it was depressed from not being able to roam, but we had 3 dogs eager to "play" with it.) When the poor thing managed to escape it's cage one fateful day, a terrifying encounter w/ our cocker spaniel left it w/ only a stub of a tail. It got infected despite our attempts to keep it cleaned as advised by a vet, & the poor thing had to be put down. ;'{ *sniff* Maybe it would have healed in its natural habitat... Love your poem & sly way of teaching! And I just know my sister would be honored to have an iguana named after her. ; )

You not only could turn Donna into a children's book, you should turn Donna into a children's book.

I like how you tell your story through a poem. She's cute!

We had some friends with an iguana habitat (and iguanas) in their basement. Better their basement than my basement... Super poem!

Donna wouldn't be welcome in my home, I'm afraid.
