Why Use Honey and Coconut Oil?
Honey works so well with hair because it is a natural humectant, which means that it holds on to water molecules, making it an ideal moisturizer. Coconut oil also acts as a moisturizer and contains lactic acid which aids in strengthening and smoothing the cuticle.
What Types of Hair Can This Treatment Be Used On?
Everyone's hair has a specific need when it comes to care and nurturing. It usually requires a significant amount of experimenting until you find what is exactly right for you in order to achieve the results you want. Always keep in mind when trying new hair treatments that what is right for someone else may not achieve the same results for you.
This hair treatment is gentle and safe enough to use on all hair types. It can be used on thin, thick, curly, straight, wavy, long, short, or medium hair. It works extremely well with smoothing and rejuvenating curly hair, damaged hair, and long dry ends. Even with normal hair types, this pre-shampoo treatment will add softness and shine.
How Do You Make Honey and Coconut Oil Pre-Shampoo?
To make this treatment, you will need the following ingredients:
3-5 Tablespoons of Honey depending on your hair length and thickness
½ Teaspoon of Coconut Oil
1 Tablespoon of Water
A small microwave safe bowl
Now that you have everything you need, put all of your ingredients into the microwave safe bowl. Don't worry about stirring them together. The ingredients will mix on their own after being heated.
Next, place the bowl with your honey, coconut oil, and water mixture in the microwave for 10-15 seconds. Do not overheat the mixture! You do not want the ingredients to be hot at all. The microwave is used to make the texture of the honey more fluid, not to achieve heat. Your end result should be slightly warm and have a liquid like consistency.
How Do You Apply The Treatment?
Start out by detangling your dry hair. Then, wet your hair down with luke warm water. Remove excess water with a terry cloth or towel so that the hair is damp, not soaking.
*This treatment can be a little messy to apply. It is best to use this treatment when you are relaxing in the tub so that you don't have to worry about dripping on your clothing during application or while it's sitting. You can also wear an old T-shirt. The honey will wash out but the oil may stain.
Place a small amount of the mixture into your palms and begin to apply to your hair in sections starting at the ends and working up to the roots. Cover all of your hair and massage the scalp with the remaining honey and coconut oil treatment. Do not comb or brush your hair after the mixture has been applied. You can cause damage to your delicate strands.
Place a shower cap over the hair and let the mixture sit for at least 15-20 minutes. If your hair is very dry or damaged, you may choose to leave it on longer for extra moisturizing.
When you are ready to rinse your honey and coconut oil pre-shampoo out, use warm water only first. You will feel the extra softness as you rinse the treatment from your hair. Rinse for about 90 seconds.
If you have normal to oily hair, take a dime sized amount of your normal shampoo and wash your hair as usual.
If you have dry, frizzy or damaged hair, skip the shampoo to prevent further drying.
Now, apply a small amount of conditioner to your hair from your ears to your ends and let sit for at least 1 minute. Finish with a cool rinse.
Allow your hair to air dry if possible.
Style your hair as usual and enjoy!
