Aransas Pass is well-known to fishermen and visitors from the Southwestern U.S., but it doesn't have the allure of Florida's white beaches or the east coast's beaches for sun lovers and bathers. The little village became more populated when people began to recognize the wonderful value of its fishing and shrimp industry. After WWII the shrimping fleet had become the largest on the Gulf Coast! Appalachicola, FL is the main competitor today, as far as I know. Fishing is probably the little town's number one industry, hands down. It has become a real paradise for retirees because of all the outdoor activities available day-in and day-out. Fish, hunt, sail, and even birdwatch to your heart's content. It's also convenient that this town is just a two or three hour's drive from Houston and just a few miles from Corpus Christi. Hurricanes do pop up from season to season, but people living on the coast are well aware of that.

Fishing, naturally, is one of the favorite pass-times of the residents and incoming retirees. Some have their own boats, but a lot of them don't. And people coming for short visits who want to fish need good professionals who can take them to the best spots, bait the hooks with the right bait, throw out squid or fish parts to draw fish, and clean the catch. It's hard work and many people with boats don't use them for anything but pleasure cruising. That said, there are many excellent fishermen who rent out their services. I've looked for the ones with the most compliments and comments, and for folks who have been in the business a long time.

Mike Nugent has been running a charter business since 1978, so he knows the waters, the fish, and the weather around Aransas Pass intimately. He also knows the very best places to fish and what particular species are feeding at certain times. If you want to catch a boatload, it's necessary to go where the fish are and to know how to draw them to the boat. He happens also to have a 100-ton license from the U.S. Coast Guard. He fishes off a 36-ft. boat and has an assortment of rods to suit almost any type of catch. Fees are listed on the front page of his web site. An 8-hr. trip costs $650 for 2 people, with an added $50 for each additional person. Unless there's a specific reason, I would never go out on a trip longer than this. Fishing is very tiring when combined with the wind, the rigor of angling, and the sun. He does scuba trips and goes in many different areas. He'll also rent out 16-ft. skiffs to people who want to go out on their own.

Captain George gas been fishing the Port Aransas and Rockport area since he was a young boy, so he knows the Gulf Coast fishing waters like the back of his hand. But as impressed as I was with his web site and its many interesting links, the unique feature I was impressed with has nothing to do with the site. He offers guarantees that you will return with fish or you won't pay! He also guarantees a full charter even if the limit is reached quickly. He has a lot of repeat business. A full day of fishing only costs $450 for two, and $500 for three. A half-day is $350 for two and $400 for three to four people. Call him for rates for more people. A $200 deposit is required on all charters. It is refundable if canceled by bad weather.

Brent Hopkins is master of this site. He has 15 years experience guiding and fishing the waters of the Pass, Port Aransas and both inland and deep-sea areas. Trout, redfish, drum and whitetail are specialties for his crew, but call to ask about other fish and the times they feed and run. He runs a 25-ft. fiberglass hulled boat. While people fishing in the summer may have to provide a small percentage toward the cost of bait, his prices are good at $400 for two and $475 for three. Like the other guides mentioned, he furnishes everything needed except for sandwiches and food on the trip. He also guides hunting trips and likes to do corporate trips, which set his charter service apart from some of the others.
