I don't remember health in elementary school. It was like twenty years ago so I don't think they had it then. I know that they now have health in elementary school once a week or so which I don't think is enough. As for upper middle school, I remember learning about the human body which was pretty cut and dry. As for drugs and stuff, we had D.A.R.E which I liked although I was raised by very moral and conservative parents and never thought about doing drugs or alcohol. As for sex, all my teachers ever taught was abstinance. Abstiance is a good thing, but teachers also need to teach students about safe sex and how to protect themselves. I never had any good experiences with physical education. I remember being slow and being the last one to finish running and I also remember being picked last for teams. The only good thing about P.E. for me is that I really starting talking to my best my best friend in P.E. during the 6th
The experinces I had in P.E. and health haven't really affected me as an adult. I know that I wasn't picked on teams since I'm not athletic so I'm sure that it wasn't anything personal there. I do still wear my D.A.R.E shirt and did enjoy learning about the dangers of drugs and alcohol since it gave me the strength, courage, and commitment to say no. As for changes, I wish I was graded more on my effort than my performance in P.E. I also wish that P.E. had a wider range of activities, including ones that were really fun and easy, and that students were given a choice of what activities they could participate in. I would have loved to learn to swim in P.E. since I still don't know how, and I also love bowling and darts which weren't offered to me in P.E. As for health, I would have liked to explore other things than abstinance and I would have liked to learn more about genetic non-genetic abnormalites. I learned about ones like Down Syndrome, AD/HD, and Autism, but the rarer ones weren't covered at all. For example, I myself have Turner's Syndrome and 90% of people I talk to don't know what it is.
