Experiencing Nature's Gifts Through Outdoor Activities

Welcome to the Great Outdoors

Tina Herzog
Spending time in the great outdoors is rejuvenating. It promotes healing, extends nature's energies into our beings, and allows us to forget our responsibilities; momentarily. There is a connection found in nature that is simply non-existent elsewhere. In order to experience all the wonderment, let's explore a few options to consider for your next journey.

WEATHER

Rain or shine; outdoor enthusiasts are always prepared. Proper clothing, alternate activities, and safety need to be considered for any outing. Knowing what interesting items to add to your agendas will spice up the adventure. Everyone can list fun and exciting ways to enjoy the sunshine, but are you aware of the surprises that are only found on rain-filled days? Enjoy the calming effects of the rivers; try trout fishing during rain. Put on some rubber boots and walk the forest trails; listening to all the musical melodies of a rain symphony. Seeing Nature in its most purest state, bonds us to the awesomeness of our Mother.

DAY OR NIGHT

The time of your outing should coincide with the peak of the activity you chose. When utilizing nature trails, make sure you estimate more than enough time to complete your journey. We do not want the sun's setting to hinder our fun levels. In fact, my favorite outdoor activities take place at night. There is something indescribable about a campfire's allure. Roasting marshmallows for smores, dancing flames hypnotizing the unsuspecting onlookers, and ghost stories being told in charade form; who could find anything more relaxing? Capturing fireflies with insect-safe containers; definately a close second.

ACTIVITY LEVEL

Rather high, moderate, or low activity levels are desired; the outdoors has you covered. Spending hours biking down scenic trails; renews your spirit. The entire family can partake in a berry-picking project or a treasure hunt. There is truly nothing more surreal than to witness a child's look of discovery. Got a canoe? Keep in shape by rowing through new areas with a picnic lunch along. What about hunting? Small game, turkey, and other creatures are exciting to watch. It amazes me to see the amusing interactions amongst the animals.

EDUCATION

Once you start exploring the outdoors, it is impossible to stop. The best gift that Nature offers is education. Do some research and have fun learning. Have you heard of "mushrooming"? Get yourself a mushroom book and utilize its information to go mushroom picking! Be careful, though--remember if you are not sure; toss it. Be ever vigilant of your surroundings. Respect the outdoors; always.

Are you ready to add the adventures of outdoor activities, but not sure where to start? The best sources for free information in your area: your local DNR office, visitor's center, and a map. The vast educational material at your fingertips may overwhelm you; take it one pamphlet at a time. Pick a few interest to begin with, and expand as your comfort level rises.

Now that you have the tools to properly introduce nature into your life; enjoy! The world of outdoor activities is truly endless. All one needs is an imagination, compass, and the willingness to experience new and energizing atmospheres. Don't forget to share your findings with family and friends. Everyone needs and deserves that special feeling, we can only capture in nature's home.
