Explanation of Golf for the Beginner

GK
Golf has been steadily gaining popularity for the past 50 years or longer. We have seen champions including Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and Tiger Woods attempt to conquer world famous courses such as Augusta National, Pebble Beach, and TPC at Scottsdale. Watching these spectator events can be interesting, but many people had rather take part in the relaxing sport, with it's opportunity to be outside, socializing with buddies, and trying to beat your last game and become as close as possible to perfect. Some people may want to get into the game of golf, but do not really know any of its rules, guidelines, or where even to begin.

The sport of golf is played on an 18-hole course, that can be played as a 9-hole game of a full 18-hole one. which each hole having a "par," or a suggested number of strokes (hits) it should take to sink the ball. Pars are decided based on the difficulty of the hole, and generally range from 3 to 6 shots. For example, on a par 4 hole, if you get the ball in the hole in 4 shots, you have made par. If you get it in 3, you have made a "birdie" (being 1 under par), and if you get it in 5, you have made a "bogie" (being 1 over par). Shots include tee shots or "drives," fairway shots, chips (shots that get you up on the green), and putts.

Most holes contain some form of "hazards" that will increase its difficulty. This may include bodies of water, sand pits, trees, or areas of rough grass. Some golf courses offer holes that are geared toward beginners, meaning they have less hazards. Finding these easier courses in your area is advisable if you are just getting your feet wet in the world of golfing. Also, many courses offer different tees, depending on whether you are male or female, and an amateur or pro. Select the tee spot that closely reflects your gender and experience. Children are welcome to tee off from the female spot.

Scoring a game of golf is completely easy. Each player is given a score card at the beginning of the game. All that is done is recording the number of strokes it took on each hole to successfully sink the ball. At the end of the game, the fewest strokes wins. When you are just starting out, you may be given a "handicap," or a certain number of strokes that are subtracted from your final score. This is offered if you are a newbie playing against novice or pro players.

Golf is a satisfying, leisurely activity. You can get a full body workout, especially if you opt to walk through the course rather than ride a golf cart. It is a perfect change to have fun with your friends, as chatting between holes is evident. Just have fun, concentrate on your swing and the ball, and you will see your score dropping quickly.
