Exploratorium Lexington: Fun and Informative Kids' Spot

Jessica Lynn
Formerly known as The Lexington Children's Museum, the Explorium Lexington is one of America's oldest children's museums and has been a great Lexington kids spot since 1990.

The Explorium Lexington is three floors of fun with 9 different discovery zones. Visitors can visit the space area and walk on the moon or learn about the planets. Or they can visit the area that deals with the human body and play inside a large set of teeth or walk through a giant pulsating heart. The "homes around the world" area features houses from different cultures including pueblos and log cabins. A large tortoise shell can be seen in the area about dinosaurs and Lexington kids can "rock climb" across a wall painted with a mountain mural. There is also a dinosaur made of 17,500 gumballs. Toddlers can enjoy the visit while playing music on pvc piping, in the water or blocks play stations or by building a huge castle with huge cardboard blocks.

Aside from being a great Lexington kids spot to visit, the Explorium Lexington offers workshops, events, space for birthday parties, teacher appreciation days and summer camps. During teacher appreciation days, teachers receive free admission and spend the day receiving information and tips and tricks for interesting classroom activities. The art and science workshops are held every weekend and the museum can be rented for special events or over night activities.

Every year, this Lexington kids spot closes down Short Street and hosts the Museum Go Round. Museum Go Round is a street festival that allows young artists to showcase and sell their work amidst many fun and engaging activities hosted by the Explorium. For $10, young artists (ages 18 and under) can have a booth which includes a six foot table, two chairs and a table cloth. With over 100 artists showcasing all kinds of art from sculptures and hand made cards to jewelry, paintings, flip flops and photography this event draws over 2500 people. The event is in September and allows free admission to the festival and the museum.

This Lexington kids spot is located at 440 West Short St in Lexington, Kentucky (40507) and is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 5 pm. On Sundays it is open from 1 pm to 5 pm. The museum is closed Mondays, Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. There is free parking available at the Victorian Square garage at Short and Broadway.
