Whether you chose to explore the rainforest or the highlands there will be plenty of adventure such as canyoning, zip lining, kayaking, biking , climbing or hiking. And for those who love to sport fish Puerto Quetzal on the Pacific Ocean is the leading destination to visit with records broken every year in numbers of sailfish and marlin catches.
A company that offers many active options is the Guatemalan Road Less Traveled and this company has a 9-night multi activity program called the Lost World Adventures that is a must.
Your first night on the Lost World Adventures Tour will be in Antigua with the action starting the next day with a local market visit in San Juan Comalapa. You will then head off to the remote highland area called Alaska where you will bike or hike local trails and paths en-route to Quetzaltenango.
At Quetzaltenango you will stay for 2 nights. During this stay you will enjoy a whole day in and around the Chicabal Volcano. This adventure will include an hour-long walk up to the rim of the crater and down into the crater whose lake is a sacred place for the Maya. In fact a local shaman performs a blessing ritual for the travelers at the water's edge.
You will then cycle into the Almolonga Valley and visit the celebrated vegetable market continuing on through tropical lowlands where you will cross rivers, hanging bridges, ravines and local coffee farms.
The next 2-night stop you will have will be at Lake Atitlan where the highlights will include touring the Tzutuhil Maya settlements and markets, hiking on the sacred Cerro de Oro hill and kayaking from village to village.
Then back to Antigua for a further 2-night stop and a hike up the active Pacaya Volcano, a tour of the town's colonial treasures and a visit to a working coffee farm.
Your final destination will be at El Peten Rainforest. Here you will have the fun of a zipline adventure and then a jungle trek to the ceremonial center of Ceibal where you will arrive just in time for sunset.
A day left to explore Tikal. At Tikal you can walk from plaza to plaza and climb the staircases of many pyramids and Mayan temples.
The Guatemalan Road Less Traveled, Lost Adventures Tour is a great way to explore Guatemala with the cost running from $3,633 pp dbl for two persons traveling together and $2960 pp dbl for four persons traveling together.
