Madhya Pradesh is a State of India that has many places to be visited due to their history and natural beauty. Mandavgadh is one of such vital places that have a very old history as well as the beauty of nature. Mandavgadh, shortly known as Mandu, is famous as a place where love story of mogul sardar Bajbahadur and Rajput girl Rupmati had taken place. Mandu is located at a height of around 1000 feet from main sea level. Mandu was the capital of the Parmar rulers of Malva. Mogul kings of Delhi won Mandu in the year 1365. King Akbar destroyed all old palaces of Mandu. Later on, King Jehangir repaired all those palaces and established Mandu as a tourist place.

Mandu is situated around 60 miles away from Indore, one of the major cities of Madhya Pradesh. You can reach Mandu by road through hired car/taxi or State Transport buses. Be careful during this drive as the roads are in very bad condition and you must ensure tiptop condition of your car. There are couples of middle class hotels at Mandu. However, the best option is to stay at the guest house of Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board. The large spacious cottages are provided to stay that can accommodate around 4 to 6 people per cottage. The cottages are also nicely decorated. The rates of these cottages are Rs.2500 ($63) per day per cottage. The cafeterias of these cottages also provide good meals at extra rates. The average rate for a meal is around RS.80 ($2) per head. There are not much STD phone facilities here and it is most likely that your cell phones also may not be able to receive good signals here due to its far and remote location. The other facilities are also very scarce here. However, the positive aspects are the places of tourist attraction here.

Rani Rupmati's palace is the most vital spot here. Queen Rupmati was staying at this palace. Mogul king Akbar attacked Mandu to win Rupmati, who was madly in love with local king Bajbahadur. Baj Bahadur was defeated by King Akbar and Rupmati committed suicide by drinking poison. The palace has typical sad environment due to the tragedy that happened with these lovers. Rewa Kund Lake is the next place to be seen. The palace of Baj Bahadur is on the bank of this famous lake. It was built in the year 1509. This beautiful palace is the witness to the immortal love of Rupmati and Baj Bahadur. The famous Jahaj Mahal of Mandu is a place that you should never miss. As this palace is in the shape of a large ship, it is called Jahaj Palace. This most famous palace of Mandu was built by King Gyassudin in the year 1514. The Hindola Mahal is the next in line. As the walls of this palace are slopping downwards, it is named Hindola Mahal. This palace is the architectural marvel and must be visited. Champa Bavadi is the water storage stepped well situated in the West of Jahaj Mahal and Hindola Mahal. The people used to take rest here inside this stepped well during hot summer. There are other famous places like Dilawarkhan's mosque, Jama Mosque, Taveli palace, and Hoshangsha's tomb that must be visited here at Mandu. The places like Neelkanth temple, echo point, Asarfi palace, and jail mahal may also be visited in case you have time. The hired car/taxi is the best option to move around all these places of Mandu. Try to avoid visiting Mandu during summer months from March to June due to severe heat. Make sure to carry your own supply of drinking water bottles with you while visiting Mandu. Also, be careful while taking food at some local restaurants as the standard of cleanliness can be very poor here.

Mandavgadh is a historical place and the tourists interested in such areas do visit this place. However, all the visitors must make a note of limited facilities available here at Mandu prior to making firm plan for its visit.
