These shaking towers were made before around 800 years by the King of Ahmedabad, Ahmedshah. There are two towers opposite to each other. They are around 22 meters tall and are made up of stone. Each tower has 3 floors. Each floor has beautifully carved stone balconies, where you can stand. If you shake one tower by standing on top of it physically with your hands, the other tower is seen and felt vibrating after a lapse of few seconds. This has been actually experienced by thousands of tourists, who have visited this place. The most amazing part is the passage between the two towers remains steady and do not vibrate. This was also the biggest mystery for the Britishers and they broke one of such towers to know and understand the reason of such shaking.
They also could not find out any reasons for this shaking of the towers. The scientists have expressed that there has to be a hollow air tunnel between the two towers so as to transmit the force to the other tower. However, no such tunnel is found till today. The most amazing aspect is that in spite of such rigorous shaking, the towers are intact today, even after 800 years. Though, the outside structure of the towers has gone old but the shaking can still be very well noticed to the amplitude of around 6 to 8 millimeters. This has been really the mystery even today in the age of science and technology. These towers are located inside the complex of the famous Jama Masjid near the Sarangpur gate in city of Ahmedabad.
The visiting hours are daily from 10 am to 6 pm for these towers but if you want to go up and feel the vibrations of the towers, you need to take permission from the Government authorities. This practice has been introduced after the tragedy at Qutub Minar in Delhi, where around 40 children died in the stamping that occurred subsequent to the electricity failure in the staircase area. These towers also have very dark and circular stairways that are difficult to climb. There is also a guide service available here. It is advisable to hire the guide as their hands are trained to shake the towers to the maximum so as to feel other tower vibrating. The guide can vibrate one tower with his hands and you can feel the vibrations while standing on the other tower.
