With all of the incredible sights Prague has to offer, you could easily spend a week just exploring the city. However, if you are willing to venture to the outskirts, there is a day trip not to be missed! Prague Zoo provides family fun in the most beautiful setting imaginable. Since it was first built in 1931, the zoo has grown into the spectacular attraction which stands today. For animal lovers who want to see something a little different, it is well worth a visit.
From the moment you arrive at Prague Zoo, the beauty of the area hits you instantly. The entrance is a little bit like the Hollywood Walk of Fame, as the paved walkway has stars embedded with the names and paw prints of some of the zoo's animals! Once inside, it is the nature that will take your breath away. While most zoos have footpaths with trees and bushes on either side, there is just something magical about how natural, yet perfectly preserved everything is. There are also little streams, rivers and waterfalls that you will spot as you walk between enclosures.
You can bet that at any zoo you visit, you will see lions, tigers, zebras, monkeys and giraffes. Prague Zoo has all of these and much more. Among some of the other animals you can expect to see are polar bears, sea lions, capybaras, kangaroos, emus and camels. That doesn't even come close to listing every animal homed there though. Because it is such a huge area, there really is an incredible amount to see.
Facilities at the park are excellent. There are toilets located all over, and there are also many food and drinks kiosks to help keep your energy levels up! At the time of year I visited, it was exceptionally hot, but there was no chance of dehydration because there were so many places to stop and grab a drink.
There is a large play area for children, so if you want to stop for a rest, the kids will be able to happily entertain themselves for a while. If they are feeling adventurous, they may even want to take a climb up the coolest attraction at the zoo! A staggering 862 metres above the zoo entrance is the top of a wooden viewing tower. It's a bit of a trek, but once you reach the top you will get to see stunning views over Prague and the zoo. The sight is magnificent and not to be missed - as long as you're not afraid of heights!
Admission to the zoo costs 150 CZK per adult which translates to just over $8.50/5.40 This is exceptionally good value for a day trip, and even factoring in costs of food and bus fare, it is not going to put a huge dent in your holiday money. For everything Prague Zoo can provide you with, it is definitely a place worth seeing.
