Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor - The Basics
The Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor is a large area that spans over four different states, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina. This cultural corridor was established by the United States Congress in 2006. This area celebrates the cultural contributions made to the area by West Africans that were brought the country as slaves. Here you will find a collection of historic points, trails, historical buildings and points of interest that will broaden your understanding of the cultural development of this part of the country.
Things to Do
Since the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor is a region as opposed to a defined park you need to plan your visit based on what state you are visiting and what type of sites and attractions you want to visit. There are countless sites to see in the four designated states including Native American sites like the Ocmulgee Earth Lodge, which has a floor that is over 1,000 years old. Some of the activities that are available include historical trails, historical building tours and cultural center tours.
What to Bring
The South is known for many things, but it is particularly known for its hot and humid summer weather. If you are traveling to the South during the summer months then remember to bring a sun hat, sunglasses, light weight cotton clothing and appropriate footwear. A small fan or cooling system is also a good idea if you plan on spending a lot of time outside. To save money on your recreation in the Gullah/Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor then check out the chamber of commerce for the states that you will be visiting. Sometimes they offer savings passes for state attractions and lodging.
