Exploring Resources for Alternative Energy

Alternative forms of energy are becoming more and more available to the working man. One that is most common is solar power. Solar power uses photovoltaic cells to turn sunlight into electricity, and as technology gets more advanced the return on investment of the system gets shorter. Solar energy can be used not only for electricity, but also for heating, and for generating hot water. Solar energy is pollution free alternative because it uses only the suns rays to convert light into power. Every day researchers are advancing in new and more efficient means to economically harness the sun's energy. There are two basic solar power systems available. First the photovoltaic cells store their energy into batteries which then run most if now all of the normal household functions. The other is the energy created by the photovoltaic cells is connected directly to the power grid and will turn your energy use meter backwards giving you a credit or in some cases negating your energy bill. There is of course systems that use a combination of both of the above to give the best use of this alternate energy.
Wind energy has become another great alternative energy generator. With both government and the private moneys being invested into it, it is one of the biggest alternative energy sources to date. They are called "wind farms". The large triple bladed windmills that cover the mountain passes and windy plains. They capture the force of the wind and convert it into electricity. Windmills have been used for centuries to harness energy. Mostly to draw up water from deep wells to water crops, water animals in remote locations and provide fresh water for remote homes. The modern windmills however, use the power of the wind to turn a generator to produce electricity. The biggest problem with windmills of course is that there must be wind to make them work. If there is not enough wind to spin the blades than no energy is produced. As a totally independent energy source wind energy is not a totally dependable alternate source.

Another alternative energy source is hydroelectric energy. Hydroelectric energy harnesses the force of moving water through a river as it flows downhill. This method has been extremely successful in consistent substantial power generation. Hydroelectric power runs into more problems with government regulations to become profitable than with problems finding sources of water to drive the turbine.

The reason for the government regulation is that dams must be built in order to control the flow of water in sufficient quantities to generate power. As you can imagine building a dam is an expensive undertaking and comes into opposition from various groups who don't what it built on their river. Conservationists also bring up concerns and can and do have any effort to build a dam tied up with numerous court cases.

A hydro plant doesn't always need a dam built if the electricity needs aren't too large. There are small run-of-river hydroelectric converters that do a good job of supplying neighborhoods and personal business and residences with power.

With an unlimited amount of geothermal activity in the earth, geothermal energy is an ideal alternative energy source. Geothermal activity is a natural reoccurring release of thermal energy from the earth's core. This energy is released as steam, which is harnessed to turn electric turbines to generate power. These artesian waters just below the earth's surface can provide an unlimited amount of natural energy to dive numerous power plants. For some reason however, it is a source that is not harnessed to it's fullest potential. Geothermal power plants can and do harness this energy through various means. There are "dry steam" power plants, "flash" power plants, and "binary" power plants for harnessing geothermal energy. The purpose of drawing up the hot water is for the gathering of the steam. Geysers, such as the ones located north of San Francisco, are some of the best known of all geothermal sites? It would be a great benefit to all if we would harness this endless energy source more and provide our current and future energy needs for alternative energy.
