Who says science isn't fun? Anyone who believes science is one big yawn has definitely never been to the Louisville Science Center, "the largest hands-on science center in Kentucky." When you enter the doors of this museum, you are greeted by color and excitement. Families can explore 150 interactive exhibits and activity stations, a four-story IMAX theater, and educational laboratories.

The Louisville Science Center had its start in 1871 as a mere "cabinet of curiosities" housed in the public library. Throughout the years, it has grown into a state-of-the-art facility that draws about 550,000 visitors each year.

The mission of the Louisville Science Center is to improve people's understanding of math, science, and technology through fun, hands-on exhibits. The goal is to entertain while educating.

One permanent exhibit within the museum is the World We Create. In this exhibit, visitors must use their problem-solving skills in order to interact with exhibits based on chemistry, engineering, physics, technology, manufacturing, and telecommunications. Visitors learn how these particular fields of science influence everyday life.

KidZone, a special area for children younger than seven was created in 1998. Within this space, children are allowed to explore exhibits that feature hands-on scientific activities where they can crawl, climb, and engage in safe, active play.

The World Within Us is a permanent exhibit, featuring several galleries. This exhibit allows people to learn about the importance of being healthy. The BodyWatch Gallery welcomes visitors to travel through seven body systems. TimeZone Gallery teaches visitors to make sensible decisions about living in a healthy manner through every stage of life. The Breakthrough Gallery highlights the medical achievents of regional medical researchers. If you're interested in life science programs, wander over to the BioLab.

The Louisville Science Center also offers The World Around Us, a natural and earth science permanent exhibit that stretches 8,000 square feet. The three galleries comprising this exhibit are Atmosphere: Air That Surrounds Us, Aquasphere: Water That Sustains Us, and Terrasphere: Environments That Supports Us. Like all the other exhibits, these galleries are hands-on, perfect for both children and adults who are curious about the world around them.

This unique museum also boasts Family Science Nights for students and their families. The popular Camp-In programs invite youth groups to participate in fun science activities, watch an exciting IMAX film, enjoy a flashlight scavenger hunt, and sleep overnight!

When you visit the Louisville Science Center you will enter a world where science is an interactive adventure for both old and young. So if you think that science is boring and not worth your time... think again! The Louisville Science Center will rapidly change your mind. It's a place where education and fun go hand in hand!
