Expository Text: All About the Non-Fictional Prose

Christina Armani
Expository text is non-fictional, factual prose written to explain. examples include how to cause and effect, classification, compare and contrast, or definition essays. In short, any piece that isn't fiction is gong to be an expository piece.

For my first grade class, I will give them an easy article or essay to read about how to help their parents recycle at home. If I can't find a decent piece, I'll construct a piece comprising of a few things from a couple of pieces.

After introducing the piece, I will ask students to predict some ways that they can help their parents recycle. After the piece, I will have them write down three examples from the text. I will also ask them to draw a picture of themselves using their favorite method at home.

I will also use a KWL chart since students respond well with them and I've seen that they work really well with the younger grades.
