Origin of the Clydesdale

Originally developed in the early nineteenth century by farmers in the Lanarkshire (formerly Clydesdale) district of Scotland, the Clydesdale was bred to be a large, sturdy, draft horse.

Strength, Agility, Docility

Long since replaced by the tractor, today the gentle, beloved Express Clydesdales may be seen in handcrafted harness, high-stepping passed crowds at parades, fairs and festivals, and competitions across the United States and Canada.

An Express Clydesdale stands between 17-19 hands high (6 feet) at the shoulder, weighs between 1,800-2,300 pounds, with hooves the size of dinner plates. Each horseshoe weighs about three pounds, averaging about nine inches wide and eight and a half inches long.

Each Clydesdale consumes about 12 pounds of feed, 12-15 pounds of hay, and 30 gallons of water per day - with occasional treats of apples and carrots.

The Barn

As befitting the black beauties, a group of Amish barn specialists from Indiana, were commissioned to reconstruct an original 1936, barn to house the horses. The group traveled to Oklahoma in 1997, to complete construction.

Today the redwood barn featuring pine wood, walnut trim, brass fixtures, a large loft displaying historic exhibits and a downstairs gift shop serves as a Welcome Center for visitors from around the world.

Travel in Style

The Express Clydesdales spend about 200 days per year on the road, traveling in a custom-built 53-foot tractor-trailer with air-cushioned suspension, rubber flooring, windows and fans for comfort. The back half of the trailer carries tack-harness, and an 1880 replica hotel coach.

The Express Clydesdales Ranch Welcome Center is free and open to the public year-round. Visit these gentle giants, scratch their ears and feel their huge heads lean in to direct your hands to their preferred scratching spot. Or watch for them to appear in your area.

This is definitely worth visiting! And free makes a great outing with the family, could even pack a picnic lunch and enjoy, several picnic tables in front of the barn.
