With all the truck sales going on you might be thinking of buying one. As you do your research about the truck, options, mileage and all you will want to check up on on warranties. Why? At the time you buy your new truck, you're going to be asked if you want an extended warranty.

Is an extended truck warranty really needed and do you want one?

Now the decision is ultimately up to you. But what you do need to know and understand is there are several choices available for extended truck warranties. You need to spend some time checking out the options before you spend lots of money for a warranty, which won't work for you.

First an extended warranty for your truck isn't going to cover any and all things that can happen to your truck. One of the worst times to find out what's really in your warranty is when your truck has a breakdown. That's why it's so important to review the extended truck warranty before you buy it, not when you need to use it. So many people get upset when they think their extended warranty is going to cover an item and it doesn't

What Are The Kinds of Truck Extended Warranties?

There are several different types of extended truck warranties you can buy. Each warranty has its own type of coverage. Some truck extended warranties are "Bumper To Bumper". This truck extended warranty is the most comprehensive warranty. It covers all types of breakdowns even those resulting from part wear and tear. That's the usual use.

Other warranties may cover only the powertrain. What does this mean? The warranty covers transmission or engine failure, BUT only if the parts are defective.

What Questions Do I Need To Ask About The Truck Extended Warranty?

You've picked out the truck you want. Now you're sitting in the sales office. The salesman is offering you the truck extended warranty. Make sure you ask questions. Now is the time.

The dealership is counting on you to be so excited about the truck you won't ask questions. Now that sales person doesn't know you, do they?

Here are some questions to ask about the coverage. Your water pump fails, and it causes your radiator to malfunction. Does the extended truck warranty cover radiator problems or a cracked block? Who pays the cost of repairs-you or the warranty?

Ask if you are required to have all maintenance done at the dealership to keep the extended warranty in effect. If you forget and are late for the required maintenances done, what happens? Is your warranty still in effect?

Does the extended truck warranty include roadside service or towing? Some trucks extended warranties include this. Believe me it's an important service if you get stuck out in the middle of now where. Often a good warranty company offers truck lockout service, towing and roadside repair. With helpful children lock out service can be a true blessing, I know from experience.

By investigating before you buy, you'll discover whether an extended truck warranty is a good idea for you or not. If you only plan to keep the truck for three years or less, then odds are a truck extended warranty won't make sense.

If you plan on keeping your truck for over ten years, then a truck extended warranty may be a good idea. But unless you do the regular maintenance and follow the warranty requirements, you may find the warranty is useless when you need it.

With extended warranties, it's buyer beware. Read the fine print. Ask questions. And if you plan to keep your truck for more than three years consider an extended truck warranty. It can save you thousands of dollars and hours of grief when you have an expensive breakdown.
