Under the Obama administration, unemployment benefits have been extended several times. This act of generosity may have good intentions but the long-term effect will not be good. First most Americans would prefer working rather than collecting unemployment; just having the opportunity to work is what makes America the great country that it is. Some people will have no desire to find employment; also there are some people who have never been out of work that have never collected unemployment benefits. According to CNN money, extending workers unemployment checks is a disincentive for them to seek work. This new extension will cause them to leech on the labor department. Although unemployment benefits may have extended, yet when the term runs out and they have exhausted their benefit extensions people are right back in the same predicament that they were in from the start. Another down side to the extension of unemployment benefits is that many states could end up in debt as a result of this. If people no longer receive employment benefits they will eventually disappear out of the labor department's system. Instead of extending unemployment benefits the more sensible alternative should be trying to create more jobs; this would work toward decreasing the need for unemployment benefits.
Unemployment benefits were never meant for people to get comfortable receiving them. They were only supposed to be for temporary assistance for displaced workers until they could five new employment. Unemployment benefits were already stretched out when the economy was normal. Now that the economy is not doing so well unemployment benefits are really running short. In the case of extending unemployment benefits, America is attempting to solve one problem while creating another one. The long term outcome of extending unemployment benefits will not be a positive one.

Post a CommentMarty,
The purpose of my article was not to try to degrade people who are currently on unemployment. Trust me we all are one paycheck away from being unemployed. I feel your pain because I too have been on unemployment before. It was a very degrading experience in how you are treated when you have to go to different employers and have to get them to fill out paperwork stating that you attempted to find a job. To complicate matters even more most companies require you to complete applications online which basically eliminates human interaction. I hope and pray that things get better for you. Remember this, although you may get knocked down if you can look up you can get up. Keep fighting the good fight!
I am so sick and tired of everyone who is employed thinking that they know what is good for those of us unemployed. Do you really think that I enjoy getting $300 a week when I was employed I made almost 4 times that a week. And create jobs - yeah right Las Vegas has almost a 14% unemployment rate and it keeps going up. Do you know what it is like to know that the job you are apply for has about 12 other people apply for it also. I want to work I do not like having my life in the hands of others as a pawn - to say when and if I will have a roof over my head. And every time they extend benefits you only get deeper in the hole and if those benefits are delayed? my car payment is almost two months behind. I am tired of getting unemployment I WANT TO WORK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I read your article with great interest. In Florida, the unemployment rate is nearly 12 percent and many have been searching for jobs with no luck. Feedback on a recent article I wrote indicated that the word "extension" may not be accurate since those who have gone through their benefit and tier levels in Florida would not get benefits, even with an extension. I wonder what they are to do?
