Exterminator: A Great Job with Great Pay

James R. Ford
I was an exterminator for over five years. I had a great boss who paid hard working people their proper worth. Each situation is different, but if you get in with a good company, you can make good money, and have job stability for many years. Most of the people I worked with, stayed with this same company for five, ten, and even twenty years. I worked for a small company with thousands of customers, but we received little benefits. Larger companies may pay less but have excellent benefits like health care and paid vacations.

Almost anyone can be trained to kill bugs and catch rodents. One of the best parts of being an exterminator is meeting people. Being a 'people person' can help if your company has allowed you to take tips. Some folks are so glad to get rid of bugs, they'll compensate you well for a job well done. Christmas can be very special too.

You'll find that some women are terrified of cockroaches. I'm not talking about the small ones (German cockroaches), I'm talking about their larger cousins (American cockroach). The American cockroach has a very cute name in South Florida. There, they call it the palmetto bug. Oh, and they fly!

It's very easy to get rid of most pesky insects. The most important part is the outside perimeter spray. By spraying insecticide at the base of all windows and doors, pests don't have a chance of getting far, once they make it inside the building. Inside, water areas are treated, like bathrooms and kitchens. Extraordinary care and professionalism must be used hand in hand with common sense. Customers have pets, children, and grandchildren.

In South Florida , ants are everywhere. Tiny sugar ants invade every home regardless of race, religion, or wealth status. Northeners, new to the area, must be reminded to refrigerate everything not in a can or jar. Carpenter ants are prevalent in homes that have had water damage from plumbing or roofing leaks. All of these problems can be solved by the mighty exterminator. Proper training and common sense come in very handy when dealing with pests.

Finally, no one likes pests. From ants crawling around a newborn baby's crib, to rats scurrying around an attic at night, procreating and defecating all over the place, the exterminator's job is never done. Finding the right company with the right amount of pay is the real job.

There was one female exterminator who worked as a GHP. She was an alcoholic and eventually got fired for a DUI.

Interesting perspective, I am licensed but have never worked professionally in this area. Did you work with many female exterminators?
