Most computers have at least a DVD drive that reads all the CD and DVD disk. The typical DVD drive these days reads and burns DVD's. The DVD drive is where you install most of your new software, play music, or watch movies. So, as you may gather, the DVD drive is vital to the entire computer system. Those with older model computers might not have a DVD drive installed that reads and burns to DVD. Or an old DVD drive just does not function anymore. So, they wonder what they are going to do with all those DVD's containing important data, or their movies or music. Especially, if buying a new computer is way out of their budget. There is one solution. Purchase an inexpensive external DVD drive and install it on the computer.

External DVD Drive Installation

Step One - Purchase a USB driven External DVD Drive like LITEON External DVD Writer or another that is compatible with your computer system. Many external drives are on the market. Those that are compatible with Windows 7 might not be compatible with XP or Vista. So, read the box for comparison and to see if it is compatible. The external DVD drives range in price from about $59.00 and up.

Step Two - One mistake many make is not reading the instructions packaged with the drive. Make sure to carefully read any additional instructions packaged with the external DVD drive. Make sure you completely understand the included instructions before preceding. Then, power up your computer. Connect the external DVD drive to any available USB ports.

Step Three - Take the disk bundled with the external DVD drive and install the software via the DVD drive. The software program should launch automatically. If the software did not install automatically check the DVD drive icon on your computer. Click on the DVD drive/click setup. And install the software manually.

Step Four - Follow the instructions that pop up on the desktop during the installation process. After installation read the users guide which should have been installed during the process.

Step Five - Test your new external DVD drive by playing a DVD movie, music, or burning data to a DVD.

The USB powered external DVD drives are the easiest to install. Certainly easier than installing an internal DVD drive. External DVD drives are available at local retailers and on the Internet at websites like Compusa,.
