Extra Hot Webcam Tips and Tricks

Webcameras offer a wonderful to way to view friends and family from far away, thanks to the wonderful internet. From college students chatting with their love several states away to soldiers in Iraq communicating with family members back home, webcams are extremely useful. However, lighting and other issues play a key role in helping perfect a webcam chat experience.

First off, always remember that most webcameras are not the top of the line, expensive models you see in movies. Instead, many have low frames per second (fps) and poor light sensitivity. This often results in choppy, poor performance that gives the impression of 'lag' and 'blurriness.' Often, especially with really cheap cameras, the only solution for this is to buy a better model. Also, a poor internet connection will result in a lousy transmission of video feed, thus also resulting in lag. These issues are often unfixable, and require a better internet connection.

However, some things can be adjusted to help the make for a better experience, even with a poor quality camera. First, take a look at the video camera location. If it is mounted in a dimly lit room, your camera will have a hard time getting a decent quality image. With the webcam plugged in, go to 'My Computer' and double click on the webcam icon. You should be able to see what your webcam is picking up, and view yourself. With this popped up, trying moving your camera around to get a better image. Adjust the lighting in the background (more or less, different angles, etc) and even try moving the computer to a different location (easiest if you have laptop) if the current setting is really poor.

You can also go and sometimes adjust the settings on the webcamera through the computer to help get a better image. This requires a little technical know-how, but many camera brands, such as Logitech, offer extensive support online, and in Help guides that walk the user through this process. Logitech's QuickCam offers settings to quickly get the best video. On others you may need to adjust the contrast, hue, saturation and even backlight settings (laptop) to obtain a better image.

Remember a few important safety tips as well when chatting online, especially with the intimacy of a webcam. Don't just click on any link sent to you, as some users like to send rather ghastly links, just to watch the expression of the receiver after they click on it. Also, avoid revealing any personal details and contact info to keep yourself safe online. Webcameras, and chatting online in general is a great way to communicate with friends, however, it is important to stay safe and maintain one's privacy while online. Happy chatting!
