Extraterrestrial Life Next Door

Have You Taken a Close Look at Your Neighbors Lately?

David A. Reinstein, LCSW
The Shadow wondered
(In the Golden Years of Radio)
What evil lurked
In the hearts of men.
And I wonder
(In the less than Golden Years of Today)
Who lives next door.
Never seen and never heard,
Never exchanged a glance or a word.
I think someone's there only through the sight
Of a light at night.
And the little bit that I see
I expect is all they see
Of me.
Cars leaving in the early AM dark
From the places that we've chosen to park.
Returning always too late
To catch a glimpse of what just might be
A Martian reprobate.

Cloistered in our own little boxes
(Sorry, Malvina Reynolds)
Afraid to venture next door
For fear of being mistaken as a solicitor -
Though I suspect there's something more.
Isolation from each other
Isn't how it use to be,
But how we're letting it become
At least a part that's me.
Aliens remain unknown
On this world or another -
This existentially somber
Piece of rhyme
May just lead us to our brother.

Life is too limited a while
To presume our neighbors
Are X Files.

My neighbors might as well be ETs. We say hello, but that's about it. Their dogs leave us presents though. How thoughtful of them...

I just realized that I know almost everyone on my side of the street and only the name of one couple on the other side. Weird.
