Extreme Cat Rescue Not so Odd

Nehal Dhruve of Hilliard, Ohio, struck a cat with her minivan. She picked the cat up and was attempting to take it to the local humane society. The stray cat, probably scared and possibly hurt, crawled up inside her dashboard and became stuck. Daryl McKay, a local mechanic, was called in to help retrieve the cat.

Several news stations picked up this story of the cat rescued from the dashboard. Yahoo! News ran it under the category of odd news. It is not really odd news that people go to extremes to rescue animals in distress. It is odd that it gets reported, because most just do it out of the kindness of their heart and never think of it as being news worthy.

Extreme animal rescues such as this one happens every day. Cats are inquisitive creatures by nature and can get in some tight spots. Animal lovers will go to extremes to rescue a trapped pet. In this case, the cat was a stray, yet the driver, the humane society and the mechanic never thought twice about dismantling the vehicle's dash to remove the stuck cat.

Two years ago, I walked past the SUV I had recently purchased and heard a meowing. After looking under it and in it, I raised the hood. It was 10 p.m. at night so I had to retrieve a flashlight. I found a tiny kitten wedged down behind some hoses. What's worse is the kitten had its head through a cut out in the inside fender well. I could squeeze my hand down and touch him, but he was stuck.

Luckily, my son was there and he came out to try and rescue the stuck cat. After several minutes we decided the only thing we could do was start removing parts. I did not hesitate or think twice about dismantling the SUV I had just purchased. After removing hoses, various car parts and rubbing a little vegetable oil around the kitten's neck, he was safely removed and placed in my granddaughter's arms.

Animal lovers will go to extremes to help a pet in distress. People tear apart their homes, their cars and their yards to rescue dogs, cats and many other animals. Nehal Dhruve and the mechanic from Hilliary Ohio did what any animal lover would do. If you are wondering what became of the stray cat in her dashboard, she has decided to adopt it.
