Extreme Coupon Strategies for Shopping at Walgreens

Lynda Altman
Walgreens is a coupon friendly retailer. Combining coupons with Walgreens sales can result in extreme savings but you must plan ahead before you shop. Here are some extreme coupon strategies for shopping at this retailer that will save you a bundle.

Walgreens weekly circular

Walgreens has a weekly sales circular. You can find it in most Sunday papers, at the store or online. The sales circular is critical to achieving extreme coupon savings at Walgreens. If you are looking to get the best deals possible you must be ready to shop with your coupons clipped and matched to sales as soon as the store opens on Sunday morning.

Sign up at the Walgreens website with your email address and request the weekly sales flyer by email. Walgreens sends out "sneak previews" of their flyer on Friday evening. With the electronic version of the flyer you can create a shopping list, print out Walgreens coupons from the flyer and see which items will have coupons available in the Sunday paper. If you prefer to have the circular sent to your smartphone--Walgreens has an app for Android and iPhone.

Register Rewards

Register Rewards are Catalinas. A Catalina is a coupon that prints out at the register when you make a qualifying purchase. The Walgreens Register Rewards can be used on almost anything in the store except dairy products, prescriptions, money or gift cards, tobacco and other items. See their coupon policy for complete details. I consider Registering Rewards to be Walgreens cash. Pay attention to the expiration date. They usually expire two weeks from the day they were printed.

Register Rewards can be used to purchase products that print more Register Rewards. There is a catch. If you read the Register Reward along the bottom left-hand side it will read "compliments of company". Pay attention to this. If you use a Register Reward that says "Compliments of Colgate" to purchase any other Colgate products that offer Register Rewards, the reward will not print. This is done to prevent looping.

I usually do two shoppings at Walgreens: one where I make purchases to get Register Rewards and a second one to spend my Register Rewards.

My favorite way to spend Register Rewards is to buy products that have a rebate of 100 percent. I did this with Nexcare bandages and ActivOn pain relief rub. Not only was I able to purchase the items for free using Register Rewards but I got back the full purchase price in the form of a bank check. I actually made money on this deal.

Deal matching websites

It is very time consuming to go through the circular and match all of the deals up with coupons and Register Rewards. I find using a website that matches up the deals for you saves a lot of time. There are too many for me to list in this article. Look for the websites that have the deals ready by Saturday evening. Don't pay for this service, there are a lot of free websites that offer this service.

Using coupons

Walgreens permits coupon stacking. Their policy allows you to combine one Walgreens coupon with one manufacturer's coupon on the same item. Register Rewards are treated as coupons, so keep this in mind.

Another coupon friendly feature of the Walgreens coupon policy is that they allow you to use two coupons for buy one, get one (BOGO) free sales. If deodorant is on sale for BOGO free, then you can use 2 manufacturer's coupons for that brand of deodorant. Combining BOGO free sales with BOGO free coupons maximizes your buying power.

Walgreens will not allow the number of all coupons'"manufacturers, Walgreens and Register Rewards'"to exceed the number of total items in the transaction. If you purchase 10 items, you cannot use more than a total of 10 coupons.
