According to discovery.com, Nathan Engles of Villa Hills, Kentucky was buying 1100 boxes of cereal, 300 toothbrushes, and 60 bottles of hand soap in a single shopping trip. Now as a couponer I know you can get toothbrushes free nearly every week, so why buy 300 at once? Even for a family of 5 getting a new toothbrush every 3 months, this is a 5 year supply. The cereal would last over 3 years eating a box a day.
I kept reading and came across Joanie Demer of McKinleyville, California who was buying 40 boxes of pasta and 20 liters of soda. Not an unreasonable amount considering that 40 boxes of pasta wouldn't even last a year if the family had pasta once a week. My stockpile is large enough to get me through for about a year in case I ever needed it to.
Next on the "Extreme Couponing" list was Joyce House of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She stated that she hadn't paid for deodorant, toothpaste, or toothbrushes in years. This is completely true. At least once a month all the major drug stores have deals where you can walk out with free health and beauty items including mouthwash, body wash, and hair care items.
The last person listed for the premiere of "Extreme Couponing" was Amanda Ostrowski from Cincinnati, Ohio. Her grocery carts were filled with 218 boxes of pasta and 268 containers of noodles. At a box of pasta a week this is 2 years worth of pasta. Now this may not be as extreme as some but in a single shopping trip is a lot of pasta.
There is not a right or wrong amount of coupons to use or items to stockpile. Everyone has to pick an amount that is right for them. However, if food needs to be thrown away because it is out of date or tastes badly from being around to long chances are you have stockpiled too much. The most important thing to remember is that it will be on sale again. Keep a notebook and track the sales s you will know when to expect it to be on sale again.

I loved the show tonight. I have already contacted everyone that I know to please give me ALL the coupons that they don't use. I would like to know if I can use copies of coupons at the stores. I do know that the ones you get online you can copy and use at Meijer but don't know about the ones out of the paper.
It sounds like many of the food items chosen are junk...it would be nice if there was an Extreme Couponing...Biggest Loser version.
It depends on your area. Giant Eagle takes store coupons up to $3, Walmart, CVS, Kuhns Market and Walgreens. Shop N Save does not. Rite Aid depends on the store. Some will, some will not. The easiest thing to do is ask the store front end manager to find out for sure.
what store takes printed coupons
Thanks for letting me know that. I actually wrote the article before the show aired so I had no idea what he did with them. Most people who do stockpile donate their extras to local foods banks and shelters which is great.
I thought that too when I saw the show but then he said he donates most of what he gets to a homeless shelter, I thought that was great. I would love to do that as well. I say keep up the good work.
