The fear of bugs, especially spiders, is present in men or women, young or old. So why not use a common and worldwide fear at Halloween time to cause a bit of panic to all your guests and trick-or-treaters. Make a large spiderweb with the fake spiderweb available in most stores at Halloween. This Halloween your spiderweb will be extra spooky.
Create a humanoid shape out of newspaper wrapper in masking tape; newspaper is light and will be easier to hang. Hang your newspaper person by the feet and then cover it in the spiderweb material and add a few fake spiders for an extra touch. A large furry spider can be placed on the body of the person with a bit of fake blood or red paint to make it extra creepy. Keep the decorations appropriate for the age group that you will be entertaining. Now you have a truly haunting Halloween decoration that will be remembered for years to come.
Ghost Writing
Any mirror or reflective surface can make an easy and cheap Halloween decoration that your guests will love. You will need some type of adhesive spray, or oil based spray like a hair shine product. Spray a nice thick mist onto the mirror or glass, being careful not to spray too close and cause running or spotting. Next, apply a slow mist of baby powder onto the the surface by sprinkling the powder into your hand and blowing it onto the glass. Repeat the process until the desired look and coverage is achieved.
Using a q-tip sprayed with the oil based liquid, write a ghostly message onto the baby powder covered glass. To give a frightening appearance make the letters uneven and wiggly, or let your children do it for you. Some examples of ghostly messages are "Help Me", "Save Me", "REDRUM", "Beware" and "Join Us". You can add more fright to your haunted Halloween decor by including hand prints or even a face print; you can use your entire face, or just a small piece for a frightening ghostly manifestation effect.
Spirit Jars
Use the same instructions above in the "Ghost Writing" section, except use a collection of glass jars. Spaghetti sauce jars are perfect, so are smaller baby food jars. It all depends on the space you have available and the look you are going for.
Spooky Shrouds
Any extra material or old curtains can be revived on Halloween to add to your decor. Hang them between doorways or to separate a room or create a path. To add an extra touch to your Halloween shrouds cut holes in them and tear the ends to give the appearance of wear. Sprinkle a bit of baby powder on your hangings to give a ghostly haunting feeling as well as the illusion of age. Hang a single piece of cloth from a doorway and then cut it in the center from the bottom to the top so that it looks like a set of curtains, and not just one panel. Make sure that you make the cut high enough so that taller people will not have trouble going through.
Cover any furniture or accessories with smaller pieces of fabric. Red, blue, purple, orange and black are all great color ideas for your Halloween shrouds. Make a simple tablecloth by covering your table with a large black sheet and use safety pins to pull up the edges of the fabric to give a vintage and gathered look.
