Exxon Mobil Corporation History and Facts

As the largest global petroleum and petrochemical refiner and marketer in the world, the Exxon Mobil Corp. also has interests in electrical power generation facilities, lubricants, waxes, asphalt and oils. Headquartered in Irving, Texas, Exxon Mobil's footprint spans six continents, including the United States and 200 other countries and territories, according to Forbes online magazine.

The Merger
In November 1999 Exxon and Mobil merged to form Exxon Mobil Corp. Since the union, the company has focused on the exploration of environmentally friendly products and community outreach. Just three years into the merger, Exxon Mobil and Stanford University created the Global Climate and Energy Project (GCEP) with the hopes of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2005 the company pioneered the Exxon Mobil Teachers Academy to promote math and science to elementary schoolchildren.

Sales and Services
In February 2010, Exxon Mobil reported $310.58 billion in revenue in fiscal year 2009. In fiscal year 2008, it reported $477.35 billion in revenue. Exxon Mobil Corporation is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange as XOM.

With a focus on providing energy solutions, Exxon Mobil Corp. seeks out sources of crude oil, natural gas and petroleum products. The company manufactures, transports and sells products from these natural elements. Exxon Mobil continually observes and researches new sources of energy production to maintain its leadership status in the corporate world.

Three key sectors create Exxon Mobil's operations: upstream, downstream and chemicals. Upstream focuses on exploration and production at sites in 38 countries. Production occurs in 23 countries. Downstream focuses on the refinery aspect of the business and marketing efforts. The chemical division is a dominant force in the global production of petrochemicals. Exxon Mobil Aviation, a subsidiary of Exxon Mobil, focuses on supplying jet fuel to more than 400 airports around the world.
