ExxonMobil: Exposed

The Truth Behind Their Profits

Robert Zirinsky
Global warming undeniably exists. The science is incontrovertible. When we burn fossil fuels, i.e. oil and coal, we release gases into the atmosphere. These gases, while blocking out sunlight, also trap the heat on the Earth, causing what is known as global warming. Companies like ExxonMobil benefit from the denial of global warming. If the public is not alarmed by what is going on, then ExxonMobil will continue to keep their record profits.
In 2006, ExxonMobil spent a record $14.5 million to help lobbyists in the fight against the theory of global warming. There has been more and more evidence to the existence of global warming. As Al Gore puts it, it's an "inconvenient truth". That is very true for ExxonMobil.

As the general public, it is very important for us to be aware of the existence of global warming. We can cut down on our emissions. It is clear that a paradigm shift in the way we view energy is a necessity. Anybody can cut back on their emissions by recycling, turning off lights, etc. We must be aware of global warming. However, companies like ExxonMobil would have you believe that it didn't exist. Why? If global warming doesn't exist, then you can buy more of their fossil fuels with a clear conscience.

"At a minimum, there's an enormous amount of uncertainty around this whole question [of global warming." --ExxonMobil CEO Rex Tillerson. Recently, ExxonMobil has stopped flatly denying global warming. They have, however, started trying to make people doubt global warming, and have started speaking about the "uncertainty" around the question of global warming. ExxonMobil, it is true, has done research about how to make their company more efficient. Yet while we pay at the pump, ExxonMobil continues to make billions of dollars. But it is critical that the public put the question to ExxonMobil: while riding on record profits, what are you going to do about global warming?

The reason why ExxonMobil is able to get away with what they do is because of the lack of public awareness. There are many things that the average American can do to cut down on their emissions of greenhouse gases (gases that contribute to global warming and the 'greenhouse' effect). Americans just need to become more aware of their environment and their surroundings. If we all did our parts, ExxonMobil would be a 'greener' company.

The science is incontrovertible. It is up to us, ExxonMobil, and other companies, to 'go green'.
