Most people are familiar with high blood pressure or hypertension and they understand that it must be controlled with medication or there can be serious consequences to your health. Very basically, there is a normal pressure gradient that should exits in our circulatory system and there is an accepted range of normal which can be affected by age, race, weight, as well as a lot of other factors. Only your doctor can tell you what is normal for you and you should heave a regular physical exam to determine that your blood pressure is being properly maintained.

The eyes of a human being also have a certain pressure range which is considered to be normal and there are also many factors which can affect your eye pressure. High eye pressure is what is termed glaucoma .Also, like blood pressure, uncontrolled eye pressure can lead to serious problems and blindness if not monitored and controlled.

The high blood pressure is not related to glaucoma or high eye pressure and controlling high blood pressure has nothing to do with controlling eye pressure.

There are factors such as age, race, heredity or family history, as well as medications and diseases which can increase your risk of having high eye pressure or glaucoma.

The high blood pressure needs to be treated separate from the glaucoma. The glaucoma is generally treated with eye drops once or twice a day. Sometimes this is not sufficient to control the eye pressure and your doctor will determine what else needs to be done.

Do not assume that if your high blood pressure is controlled that you don't need to check your eye pressure. I will be dealing with the topic of glaucoma in greater detail in future articles.
