Eye Shadow Product Review: CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast

Nickole Hogan
I am a licensed cosmetologist and practicing makeup artist. I manage a salon and I am always looking for the next eye shadow product that I can recommend to my clientele. One of the most important things to me is high color pigmentation and long lasting color. I reviewed a new product this week by CoverGirl called Smoky ShadowBlast. The color I used was the Purple/Plum, number 810.

The CoverGirl Smoky Shadow Blast is intended to make it easy to create a smoky eye. I would have to say that it is very easy to use. The double-end application makes it very simple to create a smoky eye. The two sides are labeled Step 1 and Step 2. For Step 1 you apply that lighter color over you entire lid. For Step 2 you apply that above the eye crease to create a contour. That essentially will give you a smoky eye look. Although the colors are fairly natural, somewhat muted and not highly pigmented, they are great for someone who would like to create an everyday smoky eye.

I applied the CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast to myself and one of my clients. I would have to say that I was very disappointed with how long the ShadowBlast lasted. It has a creamy texture and those types of shadows, in general, lack in longevity. I instructed my client to call me midday to inform me of how her shadow was looking. She called saying that the dark shadow creased heavily and that the color was almost gone. She did not like it at all. However, she did like how the CoverGirl Smoky ShadowBlast was easy to apply.

I had a very similar experience. I actually took it one step further and applied a primer to my eyelid to help the product last. Within 4 hours, my color was creased and it looked almost as if I didn't even apply makeup at all on my brow bone. I had to re-apply it and by the end of the day, and there was very little left on my eye.

Overall, I would not suggest this product to my clients mainly because it does not last throughout the day. My clients that seek simplicity and ease would never want to reapply their shadow in the middle of the day. Even though they made it very easy to apply the Smoky ShadowBlast, the product simply does not last.

Thanks for saving me money as now I know it's not worth the price.
