Eyebrow Maintenance: What's the Real Schedule?

The best course of treatment to keep your eyebrows arched to perfection is regular waxing by a pro esthetician. Cost of said maintenance will run you $8 to $60 depending on where you live and how high-end a salon you're frequenting. But for busy multitasking women the $20 is hardly the problem. No, harder than finding the petty cash to lay down-even in this economy-is finding the time to schlep to a salon during even the most extended of business hours when husbands, bosses and little ones are also placing demands on those minutes. If you're like most women you get in for a professional waxing only every few months, if that. You know it's not enough, but it's what you can manage. So what's a time-strapped chick to do? Read on.

Do: Start With The Right Shape

You're welcome to attempt to achieve the correct eyebrow shape for your face on your own, but we don't recommend it. If you've never had your eyebrows professionally shaped or it's been at least six months since you've done so, get thee to a pro waxer. Even if you don't plan to do this more than twice a year, letting an expert create the right frame for your eye will start you on the right foot.

Do: Tweeze Strays Liberally

Once you've got a shape that works for you, your job is to maintain it. The first step is vigilance on the war against strays. Work tweezing into your evening routine after washing your face, or your morning routine before washing-really anytime you're already scrutinizing your puss before you've got moisturizer or foundation on. (Trust us, you don't want stray hairs attaching themselves to facial products!)

Don't: Pluck Above the Brow if You Can Help It

Below the brow line and above your eyelid is fair plucking territory. But if you can avoid it, don't start plucking above the brow. If the hairs above the brow aren't dark and thick, leave them alone, and ask your waxer to do the same to keep them so.

Don't: Do a Full Wax on Your Own

Those with a very steady hand should feel free to do touch-ups with at-home waxing kits or wax strips. These can do a very nice job cleaning up strays and lengthening the time between needed tweezing. But don't use DIY waxing as your method for creating your brows' initial shape, or for getting you back to that shape after months of neglected maintenance. Every at-home wax is only a slipped hand away from an eyebrow bald spot, so proceed with caution-think tidying, but not renovation.
