Eyes Painted Shut

Don't Cross the Yellow Tape

Kylyssa Shay
I've painted my eyes shut
like the glass panes
of a decrepit old house.
There'll be no escaping
through the windows of my soul.
The self-hatred you see
inside
is merely a reflection
from your face.
I've boarded up my mouth
like a condemned building
so there'll be no hearing
what I have to say.
Your ears are storm sealed
air-tight anyway.

Writing is art. Assuming anyone who uses a word associated with religion must believe it as as logical as assuming anyone who paints a dragon must believe in dragons. Art is created for many reasons. One of them is to tell stories and to evoke emotions. Some stories are fiction. I also wrote a story called "Of Wolves, Dogs, and Men" about how men and dogs derived magically from wolves. I don't believe it, it's just a myth story, it's fiction.

"Your writing intrigues me...from previous articles, you have said that you're an atheist. However, several articles and poems make repeated references to the "soul." I'm curious to know that as an atheist, how you define the "soul?" Why is the "soul" important to you?"

The term "soul" is both a literary device and a way of saying the mind, emotions, thoughts and personality of a person. "Windows of the soul" is a phrase thought to have been coined by St Thomas Aquinas in reference to the depth of meaning and emotional expression to be seen in a person's eyes. Plenty of folks have contacted me insisting I must believe in God if I use the word "soul." I also use the words "God" and "jihad" and "lord" and "pray" in my writing. They are part of the English language.
