Fabled Lost Lands: Lemuria and Mu

Seth Mullins
Next to Atlantis, Lemuria is the most persistently whispered name of a long-vanished civilization. Psychics (including perhaps the most renowned of all, Edgar Cayce) have mentioned it in numerous readings, and ordinary people from all walks of life have either dreamt or otherwise experienced vivid memory impressions of the land. Typically, these people had never heard of Lemuria beforehand.

Lemuria might be thought of as a contemporary of Atlantis; it is purported to have existed in the Pacific Ocean, but at around the same time. Like Atlantis, Lemuria is also believed to have exerted a strong influence on ancient Egypt and certain Central American cultures of antiquity.

Much of the material that Edgar Cayce delivered in regards to Lemuria arose in the context of past life readings given to those who sought his advice. The Lemurians, it is said, were very highly evolved spiritually; and those who've reincarnated in the present day, according to Cayce and other psychics, have done so to help mankind evolve to meet the challenges posed by our endangered world.

As far as physical records go, we can only refer to some ancient texts of the Far East and some writings on stone artifacts from Central America - and certain writings of Plato, at least insofar as Atlantis is concerned - that attest to the existence of large continents that once rose above the surface of the Pacific Ocean. Sacred Tibetan texts make reference to "Ra-Mu", and there have been inscriptions found in the Americas that describe a "lost Motherland of Mu". Mu also exists in records preserved in India: the sacred Naacal tablets. Lemuria and Mu, is has been conjectured, existed south of the equator - south of where Hawaii lies today. Both are believed to have been lush, tropical lands, with much plant and animal life that would be familiar to us and much else that would appear quite exotic.

In Seth Speaks, written (channeled) by Jane Roberts, the spiritual entity known as "Seth" describes a race from millennia passed known as the Lamanians. It would only be conjecture to draw a parallel between Lamanians and Lemurians, though both are described as having reached a high level of spiritual development and being profoundly sensitive and peace loving. Seth describes the Lamanians as having existed long before Atlantis, however, and this contradicts the readings of Cayce and others concerning Lemuria.

Has archaeology unearthed any hard evidence of these lost civilizations? The number of volcanic islands and coral atolls that exist now where Lemuria once reputedly stood attest to the geological instability in this area; and Lemuria is said to have been destroyed by natural cataclysms. Also, remains of coral have been found at depths of 1,800 feet in the Pacific - though the water animals that create coral survive in water no deeper than 150 feet. This indicates that the deeply submerged coral had to have once lain quite close to the surface.

The natives of Rapa Nui, otherwise known as Easter Island, believe that their land is actually the peak of a mountain of Mu. Indeed, Easter Island boasts huge monuments all along its coastline that none can acccount for the existence of. How were these sculptures, ranging up to forty feet in height and thirty-five tons of weight, moved up to the top of steep hillsides? Easter Island is small, and could never have supported a population sufficient for the task. Tablets have also been found on the island, with strange writing that bears strong resemblance to script from the Indus Valley in India. In the face of such evidence, might we not wonder whether there's some truth behind the story related by the natives? Is Easter Island the last visible portion of ancient Mu surviving in the modern world?
