Once you get the basic pattern for this fabric grocery bag down, you can make it in any size.
To Make a Reusable Fabric Grocery Bag Pattern You Will Need:
Fabric
Liner Fabric
Fusible interfacing
Swing Machine
Paper
Scissors
Paper Grocery Bags
To get started you want to cut up your paper grocery bag. Simply cut the front, bottom, and back out as one piece. This will leave you with 3 pieces, the front/middle/back piece and 2 identical sides.
These will be your patterns. You can trace these onto your large paper to make an exact pattern by adding one inch on to each side. It is also very simple to trace these onto your fabric, adding that extra inch on as your transfer the pattern.
Now, cut out each piece on your fabric, your interlining, and your liner fabric.
You will also need to cut out 2 identical piece so fabric for the handles. These need to be 22 inches long and 4 inches wide. Cut out 2 matching pieces of interfacing as well.
Iron the interfacing inside the handles. Fold the handles in on each long side. Fold them so that the rough edges meet in the middle. Now, iron this down.
Fold in half one more time with 2 original fooled edges no meeting. Iron down. Sew this down on the open edge to transform into a handle. You can use a matching seam on the other side. This will also create more stability in the reusable fabric shopping bag pattern.
Now, set the handles side and start working on the fabric grocery tote.
Iron the fusible interfacing into the coordinating exterior fabrics. Do this on the back of each piece of fabric.
Lay the long piece of center fabric face up on your worktable. Take one of the sidepieces and lay it face down on the first fabric. Line it up in the to left corner.
Pin the sides together. Repeat on the top right with the second piece of fabric.
Turn the large middle fabric so the bottom is now the top. Repeat the same pinning on the sides with the 2 sidepieces.
Now, pin the bottom of the bag to the bottom of the sidepieces.
Sew each seam together.
Repeat's same process on yoru liner fabric of the reusable grocery bag pattern. Leave a 5-inch opening on one of the sides of the bottom so you can turn your eco friendly grocery bag pattern inside out.
Now, turn the liner fabric inside out. Slip the outside fabric bag inside the liner.
Pin the top edges together. Place the handles inside the two fabrics. You want to do these upsides down. The rough ends will be sticking out the top about one inch. Pin in place as well.
Sew this top seam together.
Turn the whole bag inside out. Iron the seams flat so they will lay fat. Check for any problems, and then sew the opening in the liner shut by folding in the rough ends.
Finally, you can be finshed at that point, but I like to sew a tiny ΒΌ inch line down each of the four corner/ sides of the bag. You can also do this along the top seam. This will add strength to the eco friendly grocery bag pattern.
