Fabric Yo Yo Christmas Tree Ornament

A fabric yo yo circle is a little round puff of fabric that you can make from any scrap of fabric. When you put yo yo circles together, you can create an endless number of crafts. Making fabric yo yo circles is the perfect way to use up fabric scraps.

This article will teach you how to make a simple Christmas tree ornament using four yo yo circles and buttons. You can whip up lots of these ornaments quickly. Hang them in your tree and make some to give as gifts! These ornaments are also great items to sell at a Christmas bazaar.

To make this Christmas tree ornament, you will need four fabric yo yo circles in gradually decreasing sizes (see instructions on how to make a fabric yo yo at the end of this article), 10 buttons, and one decorative button (or a jingle bell) for the tree topper. You also need some strong thread or cord and a needle.

Thread your needle with about a foot of thread. Pass the thread through the decorative button (or jingle bell) that you are using as the tree topper (you are starting at the top of the ornament). Then pass the thread down through the center of the smallest yo yo. Then pass the thread through two buttons.

Next, pass the thread through the next size yo yo and through two more buttons, then the third size yo yo and two more button. Finally, pass the thread through the largest yo you and then through 4 buttons to make the tree trunk.

Now, make a U-turn and go back through the 4 buttons of the tree trunk, through the largest yo yo, through the next two buttons, etc., until you are back up to the top. Tie a knot and leave a loop for hanging the ornament and you are done!

How to make a fabric yo yo

Cut a circle out of a scrap of fabric. For practice, make the circle about 5 inches across. Hold the circle with the wrong side of the fabric facing you. Fold about 1/4 inch of the circle's raw edge toward the wrong side of the fabric and hold it down with a running stitch. Continue folding and stitching around the entire circle. After stitching al around, gather stitches tightly. Then smooth and flatten yo yo so the hole is in the center.

When making yo yo circles, just remember that the finished yo you will be about half the width of the circle you cut. So, if you want a yo yo that is two inches across, you would start with a circle that is about 4.25 inches across (the extra quarter inch allows you to fold in the hem).
