Facebook Cartoon Profile Pic News False: Trend Not Started by Pedophiles

Jeffrey Weeks
A false news rumor that the recent trend by users to change their Facebook profile pic to a cartoon character was actually started by pedophiles is sweeping through the internet and Facebook. Luckily, the rumor is not true.

Facebook users recently changed their profile pics to cartoon pictures to highlight the issue of violence against children.

Now several false alerts are making it through Facebook users' profiles in forms like this:

"PLEASE READ!! So apparently the whole change your profile pic to a cartoon character was created by a group of pedophiles (child molesters). If children see pics of cartoon characters they are more inclined to add them as a friend. This is a method pedophiles are using to gain access to children. The story is supposed ...to air on CNN tonight! No good deed goes unpunished.. if your pic is a cartoon.. change."

Despite claims that this is a story reported on by major news outlets like CNN and 60 Minutes the new warning meme is a false urban legend. Many folks are changing their pics back to themselves because the original meme stated the change should end Dec 6:

"Change your facebook profile picture to a cartoon from your childhood and invite your friends to do the same. Until Monday (December 6), there should be no human faces on facebook, but a stash of memories. This is for eliminating violence against children."

So if you want to change your Facebook profile pic back from a cartoon pic do so...but don't worry, the reasons have nothing to do with pedophiles and was started by folks who obviously have too much time on their hands.

Rumour or not - at least its thrown the spotlight on how impossible it is to tell a person with a secret sexual fancy for kids from a person who has no such sexual deviant streak! This 'blind spot' is the REAL problem we all need to think and talk about ... so I reckon that throwing the spotlight on this is not bad thing.

I believe that the rumor is a lie. I believe that it should've never been started. White power.

I know of the person who started this trend. Her mother-in-law is my Facebook friend. She started this campaign to raise awareness to the issue of child abuse and she is not a pedophile.

Just goes to show you - even the supposed "trusted" news organizations report falsely without checking out the story. Would have been nice to at least ask the company who is advertising. Wouldn't that have been at least a responsible way to report the story?
