Facebook Disabled My Account when I Did Nothing Wrong; You Could Be Next

Kat V
I don't lie about my age or where I go to school, I don't cheat people out of money, and I definitely don't display pornographic pictures of myself or others or send spam. Therefore, you can imagine how confused I was when I checked my inbox this morning to discover an email from Facebook that said the following:

Our systems indicate that you've been misusing certain features on the site. This email serves as a warning. Misuse of Facebook's features or violating Facebook's terms of use may result in your account being disabled . Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation.

My understanding? They had no way of knowing-dare I say even care-of how misunderstood I felt about the situation. The social networking site that plays second fiddle to myspace had served me a cold dish of confusion and frustration, and after an unsuccessful log-in to my Facebook account, realized that their warning was a joke. When you warn someone, you're supposed to give them a grace period to correct a situation, not automatically take drastic actions. I tried to make sense of why Facebook thought I was "misusing" content; I added Applications-features that can do everything from showing your heritage percentages to posting countdowns and quizzing your politcal beliefs-as much as the next Facebook user, but I was getting penalized for "violating Faceboook's terms of use."

What I think happened

I recall having to delete and create a new myspace page when my account was compromised due to spammers, but never imagined Facebook under the same banner of threat. I had received a notification from Facebook that said my friend Vanessa had sent me a message, but when I went to open the email all it said was, "Where and when did you take this video?" and linked me to a page where a disabled video was once allegedly posted above 2 pages of comments. This wasn't youtube but a strange video networking site I'd never heard of, but I'm wary of posting it here. Perhaps by opening this link, my Facebook became a welcoming site for spammers who performed tasks that violated Facebook's terms of use.

I sent a reply to Facebook which goes as followed:

To make this brief, I did nothing wrong. I checked the FAQ, and I have never sent any spam or posted any pornographic material. I understand that you're trying to keep this site safe, but shutting down innocent people's accounts is not the way to do it.

I'm awaiting Facebook's response, but in the meanwhile have created another account using an alternate email address.

  • Facebook's warning was a joke, they went right ahead and disabled my account
  • I'm pretty sure that a spammer got ahold of my account and did something funny to it
  • I have a new account, but I'm more vigilant than ever

I found out today, that I have had my account disabled. The only thing more ridiculous than it being disabled is the reason why. I posted on my friends wall. No innapropriate messages or content mind you, just a talk with a friend. NOTHING in their TOS says I can't talk to my friends, NOTHING in their TOS says I can't post on my friends walls. I have yet to receive anything close to an intelligent reason as to why I can't post on my friends walls. All I get is, "you post too fast." Well, what are the limits or rates at which we are allowed to post I ask, "Well, we can't tell you that, but you exceeded it." What kind of policy is this exactly? They can't expect people to abide by the usage rules, when they refuse to make those rules available.

they JUST did this to me for FORGETTING my password. i went to log in on a different browser that didn't have my password and fudged it up.

they didn't give me a warning or ask me my security question, they INSTANTLY disabled my account.

they are such a-holes about it too. i told them that myspace didn't pull crap like that and that they gave you chances to redeem yourself, facebook didn't.

they need to stop that crap.

There was a news article this week about Facebook postings to videos, such as you mentioned, completely disabling the computers of those who clicked on them. Maybe you got sent one of these links and FB threw you out with the bathwater? Anyway, an interesting article. Thanks.
